    Parks & Outdoors

    • CUMBERLAND FALLS STATE PARK - Located in the Daniel Boone National Forest at the head of Lake Cumberland. Known as the "Niagara of the South," the waterfall forms a 125-foot wide curtain that plunges 60 feet into the boulder-strewn gorge below. The area is a natural choice for water-sports enthusiasts, offering white-water rafting and canoeing among other water activities. Historic Dupont Lodge, built of massive hemlock beams and knotty pine, offers a spectacular view of the Cumberland River Valley. It's the perfect retreat after a day of hiking, rafting, swimming or horseback riding.
    • GENERAL BURNSIDE ISLAND STATE PARK - As the only island park in the Kentucky State Park's system, General Burnside on Lake Cumberland is truly a unique treasure. A peaceful retreat for campers, boaters, golfers and fishermen alike. A marina near the park has all the supplies you'll need for a great day on the lake, and the campground is the perfect home base for outdoor adventure. An 18-hole golf course and a large outdoor swimming pool plus picnic areas are available.
    • LAKE CUMBERLAND STATE RESORT PARK - Perched high above this watery expanse, Lure Lodge offers the water-lover panoramic views of the lake and the only indoor pool complex in the park system. A glass-backed elevator, atrium, exercise room and hot tub enable visitors to take in a spa experience, while a 9-hole, par-3 golf course, nature trails and riding stables offer something for guests seeking a more active vacation. Park also features cabins, camping, free-roaming wildlife and more.
    • BIG SOUTH FORK NATIONAL RIVER & RECREATION AREA - The free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries pass through 90 miles of scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide range of natural and historic features.
    • BIG SOUTH FORK RESERVATION SYSTEM National Park website where you can make online reservations for camping areas.
    • BIG SOUTH FORK SCENIC RAILWAY - Railway operates over scenic mining track in the historic gorge. Depot located in Stearns, McCreary County.
    • BIG SOUTH FORK WELCOME PAGE - Slide shows, lots of information and links on this National Park partially located in McCreary County.
    • BIG SOUTH FORK TOURISM - Lots of information and links from the west side of the National Park. Site operated by Fentress County Tennessee (Jamestown) tourism bureau.
    • CAMP WILDCAT PRESERVATION SITE - A mountain in Laurel County that is the site of the first engagement of regular troops in Kentucky during the Civil War, on Oct. 21, 1861. While remote, it is easily accessed from I-75.
    • DALE HOLLOW LAKE STATE RESORT PARK - Kentucky's newest state park, this posh resort is located on a few miles to the west of Lake Cumberland.
    • DANIEL BOONE NATIONAL FOREST - Much of the upper Lake Cumberland region is in this huge national forest, which features majestic waterfalls, trails and scenery.
    • LEVI JACKSON WILDERNESS ROAD STATE PARK - Located just a few miles to the east of Lake Cumberland, the Wilderness Road and Boone's Trace, both thoroughfares for many a pioneer coming from the East, pass through the park.
    • MILL SPRINGS BATTLEFIELD NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK - Located near Nancy, the site recognizes the importance of the pivotal Civil War battle, fought on Jan. 19, 1862, and called by Pres. A. Lincoln as the first Federal victory in the national conflict.
    • MILL SPRINGS NATIONAL CEMETERY - One of the first twelve designated National Cemeteries, the Mill Springs National Cemetery began with the Union soldiers who died during and after the Battle of Mill Springs on January 19, 1862. It was originally designated as Logan's Crossroads Cemetery later in 1862, but because of the war it did not open until July 7, 1867.
    • NEW RIVER SCENIC RAILWAY - Step back in time as you ride the New River Scenic Railway up the valley of the New River. Situated in the middle of thousands of acres of wilderness, the tracks run through some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the Northern Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee adjacent to the Big South Fork National Park.
    • GREEN RIVER LAKE STATE PARK - A recreational paradise in south central Kentucky's cave country. Located only a few miles north of Lake Cumberland.
    • PICKETT STATE PARK - Located just across the state line in Tennessee south of Wayne County, and containing the southern terminus of the 269-mile Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, this park is one of the hidden jewels of the region.
    • RAIL-TRAIL: CATHY CROCKET MEMORIAL TRAIL - The trail is part of the old Cincinnati-Southern rail bed that was relocated in the 1950s when Lake Cumberland was formed. Sloans Valley, south of Somerset to McCreary County, first 2 mile of trail dedicated 8/8/2000. Trail head about 2 miles south of Burnside.
    • RAIL-TRAIL: SHELTOWEE TRACE - Approximately 3.6 miles in McCreary County near Whitley City is a Rail Trail along Railroad Fork and Barren Fork (Section 30).
    • SHELTOWEE TRACE NATIONAL RECREATION TRAIL - A 269-mile multiple-use national recreation trail that traverses the length of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Portions of the Sheltowee Trace meanders along high, narrow ridges and cliffs, and into deep gorges along small, clear streams and whitewater rivers. In the Lake Cumberland area, the trail begins at Pickett State Park (see link above), crosses the Big South Fork and Cumberland Falls, and travels up along the Rockcastle River.
    • SHELTOWEE TRACE TRAIL - Post photos & GPS data depicting each mile of the Sheltowee Trace and connecting trails. An interactive map gives mile markers and topo downloads. The goal of this site is to map the Sheltowee Trace and the Daniel Boone NF with your help. A guide will be published.
    • SHELTOWEE TRACE BLOG SITE - A highly recommended site for anyone interested in the deep woods of the trace. Contains many photos and descriptions of hiking the great trail.
    • SHELTOWEE TRACE OUTFITTERS - Established company offering whitewater rafting near Cumberland Falls and in the Big South Fork, plus cruises on the Cumberland.
    • SOMERSET CITY PARKS - Information, locations, photos, and more about the several parks offered in the City of Somerset.
    • SGT. ALVIN C. YORK HISTORICAL PARK - The Sgt. Alvin C. York State Historic Park, located in Pall Mall, Tennessee, off US-127 just south of the KY-TN state line, pays tribute to Sgt. Alvin C. York, the backwoods marksman from the mountains of Tennessee who became one of the most decorated soldiers of World War I.
