Thoughts on the arrival of Spring

Last afternoon of winter, on the way to Lake Cumberland
This afternoon, Thursday, March 20, I took a short respite from sitting in front of the computer, where I've been working almost non-stop for the past
two days, and listening to the drone of CNN on the TV.
I've had the windows open, allowing the fresh breezes of the last days of winter air out the lakecumberland.com command bunker. During a break to
stretch my legs, I peeked out and saw some magnificent clouds in the sky, and instantly decided I had to rush down to the lake to get some photos...
and hopefully find something flowering -- it's been so long since I've managed to get some color besides brown in my lake photos.
I drove down to Jamestown Marina, which is the closest point to me, and managed to snap several nice scenes. Found some flowers, too. Then I drove
around to the other side of Lily Creek, to the Pleasant Hill community dock on Wolf Creek. It was a nice way to spend the last few hours of winter,
with the temperature at 70, the car window down, the first aromas of renewing earth, grasses, trees and plants flavoring the air.
Driving along the countryside on a smooth, thin highway that curves and twists, drops and rises with the lay of the land; the grasses beginning to add
a brighter green to the paint of the natural landscape, some bright yellow flowering bushes along with occasional yellow and bright green splashes of
wildflowers flashing by as I passed.
Watching the awesome mix of clouds constantly redesigning the sky; mixed dark and light, streaks of grey sweeping into 'big white fluffies' in a
palette of every shade of blue.
Standing beside the gurgling lake waters as they washed the shoreline, blown into constant wavelets by the steady, strong breeze on the wide expanse
where the dock is located. Still too early for motors and people, only the wind, water and ducks talked to me as I was warmed by a good sun that
managed to find some space in the skittering clouds through which to beam.
It's dark as I write this, the vernal equinox has just passed and the winter has lapsed into memory. It will likely be cold again before summer warms
the lake's waters to bathtub cozy -- almost a certainty in Kentucky -- but springtime chills are merely a way to keep reminding us to be fully aware
of this period of so much renewal.
I am a native Kentuckian. I am a native of Lake Cumberland. I was born here, and have experienced more than a half century of its seasons, its
weather, its people, its visitors and its beauty. The original Kentuckians -- whom we sometimes call Native Americans -- so revered this landscape
that it was never truly settled by them; it was a land so magnificent and rich that it was an untamed hunting ground mixed with reverence. The natural
wonders of the huge arches from Rock House in Russell County to those in McCreary County and the amazing vistas, the hundreds of waterfalls from tiny
streams to the great ledge where the entire Cumberland River drops 68 feet, all were special places in which to honor creation.
We who have followed, explored and experienced, gain the same unity with our chosen place. Those who grew up here never truly escape its wiles; many
return after roaming the world. Those who have discovered it, and truly savor it, come to consider themselves slaves to its charms as well.
As a native, as many natives are, even subconciously, we are described by a line from one of our Commonwealth's greatest writers. It is also
appropriate to any who have succumbed as well, and are assimilated 'natives' --
I am of Kentucky, and Kentucky is of me.

Thanks for the wonderful read Cumberline. I am a mathematician by trade, but I truly appreciate the wordsmith abilities of one who can juggle verbs,
adverbs, and nouns to conjure imagery like you.
Count all your blessings, remember your dreams.

Thanks Cumberline!
Your post are truly inspirational words of wisdom which makes me stop and think at my job what is really important in life today. Todays world is
filled with so many things going on that most people spend there whole life missing the things you expressed in this thread you started. I only wish
I could express myself the way you do, but in reading your words, I can at least appreciate them for what they are..... Have a GREAT DAY!!

Thanks cumberline for your latest post! I am originally from southeastern KY but have spen my adult life in central Ohio. I visit Lake Cumberland as
often as possible, and am I feel very fortunate to enjoy such beauty. I hope to move to the Lake Cumberland, Russell Springs/Jamestown area when I
retire. So, next time you're close to the Lake take an extra long look for all of us that aren't fortunate enough to be there full time........Thanks

Cumberline, looks like you have been working on the Introduction to your up coming book.....?
If I might suggest: Use your original post on this thread as the Intro and, for the closing, something akin to the piece that you did at the end of
last season - when Fall was in the air and boats were being put away and prepared for a winter nap.
BTW, can you give your anxious fans some idea of the status of your book?

As I sit here in Michigan hoping for spring to come soon your words offer relief that it is on the way and encouragement that my family will be back
in the area someday. Well spoken!

By request, I've topped this thread for awhile. This will keep it at the top of the “On Lake Cumberland” section, but will need an occasional bump if
you want it to remain topside of "today's posts".
An example of Cumberline's writing prowess (from spring of 2003).

He really couldn't have put it better - I always loved seeing things through his eyes, he allowed so many to see things around the lake so clearly
without even being there... he will be truly missed...

One thing I will miss is his vast knowledge of the history of the area. I really was looking forward to his much promised book on the cumberland
area. He had a fantastic knowledge of the area. I am hoping Jerry wrote his notes down and someone else can put it together.

A well deserved TTT
P
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming, \"WOOHOO...what a boat ride!!!\"

You ask for "thoughts on the arrival of Spring". It entirely depends upon where you live. I was raised in San Diego were perfect days were the rule
not the exception. The first day of Spring meant a large barbeque with family and friends at one of the local beaches. Then returning to my home
which had earlier been filled with the smells of an ocean breeze. East of the Mississipi, I find that the first day of Spring often means inclement
weather, melting snow, flooding, hay fever, itchy eyes, and no outdoor picnics. My dream; to make plans for the first day of Spring in February.

Thanks WW...thats some great writing. I've never seen that before and still being fairly new to the site, can see why Cumberline is so dearly missed
by all those that knew him. I felt like I was in the car with him.
