Cemetery Point Photos
The pictures have been re-posted and are on pages 3 & 4 of this thread. - Dr.
N.
Like it or not, here are some photos from Sunday, October 30, 2005.
You may be able to tell by the photos that someone has been rooting around in some of these sites. The human bones in the pictures were photographed
as we found them though it is fairly obviuos that they had been placed there. I'm certain they are from this site and that someone has found them
scattered in the area and placed them into the graves.

What kind of wood?
Wonder what kind of wood those coffins were constructed out of that they could survive, at least in part, under water for more than 50 years. They
surely weren't the typical "pine box" were they?
Nice photos Dr.
And just in time for Halloween!

They did but everybody didn't go with the cemetaries. You know how some people are, they just don't want to get along.

I had a conversation with a gentleman (possibly in his late 80's or early 90's) who was working at (reference deleted by Dr Nautica)
regarding this cemetery when I first found it 6-7 years ago and this is what he told me. He indicated that, while he wasn't familier with that site
personally, he imagined that it dated to the late 1800's, possibly Civil War era. He also suggested that the contractor's hired to move the graves
when the Lake was built most likely ran out of time due to the lake filling completely in 6 months rather than its expected time to fill of 2-3 years.
It all sounds plausible to me so that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Again, I'll say that I come down on the side of leaving well enough alone
regarding these graves. They were buried in one of the most beautiful sites on this planet and I feel it would be a shame to change that. Actually,
as you can see from the photos, there's not a whole lot to move anyway. If someone were to try, I could imagine a contractor just digging these up at
random, putting into a dump truck, then re-interring into one mass grave. I'd rather they stayed where they are.

BTW,
This is not the same site as Cemetery Island which I think is inside the mouth of Beaver/Otter.

This grave story picked up by WLEX TV 18 reporter Leigh Searcy and location misidentified as Cemetery Island, at the mouth of Beaver & Otter.Recovered
remains sent to state medical examiner Emily Craig in Frankfort .Hopefully site will be cleaned up and decorum preserved as remains properly
re-interred .

Love the historical parts of this.
I too, would like to know more....such as the names, dates interred,
name of the Cemetary, etc.
Almost tempted to drive down this weekend, launch the boat and
do some exploring myself, but would definitely not disturb the final resting places. Always have loved history, especially Civil War, etc.

In that case, I take it all back. Especially if they end up excavating this site. I REALLY think these graves should be left as they lie.

Scratches on the bottom?
One of the last photos shows what appears to be the bottom of a cofffin
with perhaps scratches in the wood?
Hmmmmmmmm

Let's all think real hard and see if we can come up with the self appointed watch dog who reported this to the WLEX news.

Half,
I was thinking that same thing earlier. Someone today had to call the news and let them know that these pictures were on the website.

WLEX TV said they received an email with pictures of the graves and bones attached to it. Did anyone really think pictures such as these could be
posted on a public forum without bringing this kind of media attention to them???

Alright then. I've deleted all but one of the photos and removed any references to location and sincerely apologize to the deceased who may now have
to undergo scrutiny by modern science and worse...
I'd love to have a face-to-face with whoever sent the email to the big city media. This isn't news folks. The location and condition of these graves
have been long known by many.
I'm also sorry to those Forum Members who would have liked to have seen the pictures for what they are, a part of the Lake and it's history. I guess
not all onboard are grown-up enough to let that happen.

Dr N
I appreciate your intent in posting the pictures. I'm certain you didn't intend for any of this to happen as a result. I read your posts about a week
or so ago concerning your feelings and beliefs about the graves. So please don't think I question your intent at all.
Judging from the length and direction of the shadows in your pictures, I was at that location very shortly after you were yesterday. During the
approximately 45 min I was there, 3 other groups of people came to the location and said they had came to check it out. It was heavily visited
yesterday and probably the entire weekend. Most (if not all) others were taking pictures as well, so I don't know whose photo's were actually emailed
to the media. But whether they were your photo's or someone else's, they're out there now and another investigation into the site has began. What the
end result of that will be I don't know at this point.

Dr. Nautica,
I appreciate you posting the pictures. I also hope that the site is left alone. It is definitely a little piece of history with the lake.
Disheartening to see that the media got involved. You are right, this is not news, its history. And history doesn't need to be the 3rd story on the 6
PM news. I feel bad for you because all you were trying to do was provide some info. for the members of this forum. Please know that I don't think you
did anything wrong. What was wrong is that someone got the media involved so that the media can do 17 stories about the site and how its should be
excavated and moved, and then they can feel so proud of themselves for making this happen.

DrNautica, you did nothing wrong and everyone enjoyed the pictures very much. Whom ever sent pictures to the media is probably some glory hound who
thinks he's or she's going to get their little picture on the news for uncovering this big secret. I truely hope they leave well enough alone as these
souls are happy just where they are, I mean with that view who wouldn't be. I'm going to have my wife sprinkle me over the big C after I go, don't
tell anybody and keep your chin up, because there wasn't a thing wrong with posting those pictures, .
