Cold? Ha! THIS was cold...

The first photo is looking at the main lake from the waterfall overlook near the waterwheel at Mill Springs Park on January 17, 1977. That day was the area's all-time low temperature for the day, -12 degrees F. It had been seriously cold since January 1, enough for the entire lake to freeze over.

The next photo was made a week and a half later, on January 30, 1977. It is of the main lake at Conley Bottom Resort. This was taken from a point just upstream (east) of the dock. The arrow points toward the roof of the dock. Note the lake remains ice-covered except for the worked area near the shoreline. It had warmed a bit by then .. it was -3 the day before, another all-time record for the day.

By the way, the ultimate cold day in the lake region was January 30, 1963, officially recorded at -33 degrees F. That's right -- 65 degrees below freezing.

Both photos were made by Monticello photographer J.D. Rogers, who maintains the following weather web site:

I think I saw these pictures on Nasa's web site. They are from the Titan probe.

My mistake, they are from the lake. A .50 cent roll of film has much better resolution than those $560 million photos.;)

Wow Pac, what a relief!!! I've been sitting here at the computer for some time, needed to go, and didn't even have to get up. I enjoyed writing in the snow, but why is my leg now wet???
