New to forum with question

Let me start by saying hello all, I'm new the the area and also new to boating. I've been building an old Baja closed bow boat. Well took it out for a test drive today and found something that I couldn't figure out in the water. It is located right as you come out from Grove, and left side of flatwoods ramp. Seen a No wake buoy, go past it and lines of smaller buoy's in water. Looks like some kind of steal framework in the water. Just wondering what it was?

Welcome to the lccom family, BajaBoater. I know absolutely nothing about Laurel, but your description leads me to guess you might be viewing a slalom ski course.

Again, welcome, and come back often.

I would have to agree with kyal98, it sounds like a slalom course. If your not famillar with a slalom course, it is used by professional water skiiers. There are 2 sets of balls, the ones down the middle is the straight course that the boat runs down. the six outer balls are what the skiier goes around in a back and forth motion.... See video

There is a ski course down Roger's Creek area.
This is maintained by the local ski club, mostly out of Grove Marina.

Sorry, where are my manners ?
Welcome to the forum. And welcome to Laurel River Lake.
Get a map and study the shoals so that you don't run aground.
Notice there are several islands to avoid also.

Good first post. If you have a question about the Lakes or the general area, this is the place to ask.

Welcome to the forum Bajaboater. Welcome to Laurel!

Congrats on getting to test drive your boat!

I agree that you were probably seeing the ski course.

FYI There are two nature reserves/preserves/whatever on the lake in case you didn't happen to see them. There is an eagle nesting area that is roped off and a goose reserve that is also roped off. They need to take the goose one down bc those dam things are everywhere and it's beautiful back there.

Most important questions... where you do put your boat in? Do you play cornhole? :)

Thanks for the Welcome.

After watching that video, I am certain that is what I saw.

I mostly put in at Flatwoods, But I don't just stay in that area. I like to travel the entire lake. Yesterday when I went I used four, six gallon gas cans up. My Straight six mercury likes the gas. Haha

I have a very old boat, I still have tons of work left to do on it. This winter I plan to separate the top and lower halves, to replace the transom and main supports. It's ok for now, but I'd like to restore the old boat to its former glory. I like having something that I built over something that I bought. I started with a boat that I paid 100 bucks for.

I need to get a good detailed map of the lake, Does anyone know where to pick one up at?

Never played cornhole. I'm more of a horse shoe's kinda guy. But always down to try something new.

If you played horseshoe.. you will love cornhole! We have transformed some old horseshoe pitchers into cornhole players. Stop by some weekend and we will give you an introduction!

Welcome to the forum and Laurel Lake.

A map can be found at Grove and probably Holly Bay. Like Lucky said, you may want to get your hands on a good map with topo and study it. Watch those danger markers, Laurel has some nasty prop busting, boat sinking points.

I've heard from those in the know that you are taking a lot of risk parking at Flatwoods. They like to steal whatever they can, including mufflers from your truck. Just fyi

Check this out too if you are new to boating.
