Stereo install

I am looking for someone to replace an existing factory installed JVC marine stereo radio with 4 speakers with a new Sony unit with a front input for an Ipod/XM hook up using the existing speakers. Just an even replacement of the radio--no amp or subwoofers. I can supply the new unit.

I am in the Nancy area near Cumberland Point. The work can be done in my garage or I can deliver the boat, a 24' Maxum. If anybody knows anyone experienced with doing this kind of work in the area please let me know.

Uuuh, I'll ask the obvious question: "Why not do it yourself?"

Since you are swapping one for another, it really isn't "rocket science" and requires just a few basic tools. (No offense meant to those trained, experienced installers out there)

The new radio will come with instructions and there are probably a dozen YouTube videos out there that detail the process:D

Yeah CB I probably could try to do it myself. Maybe some folks familiar with this can give me some pointers: Will the existing wiring connector on the JVC unit simply unplug and then plug into the Sony unit or are these connectors specific/different across brands? or would I be faced with locating the existing wire splices for the speakers, hot, ground, and memory and be required to make new connections?

It's very tight behind the dash with the steering mechanism in the way, and it is currently very neat! It is hard to tell if there is much slack in this wire bundle as it is ziptied and taped from what I can tell. There must be "tricks" to this trade to work in such a confined space to make necessary splices and heat schrink all the connections all while laying on your back and trying to command fat fingers!

Most radios no have the same plug in the back for power and speaker outputs. BUT, they can be in different configurations. I changed radios from an old Aiwa to a Sony and the plugs were the same except for the location of the amp remote output. I just changed the position on the plug to match the new radio and it was done. Also you might need to change the radio mounting cage. If the plugs are identical withe the same color wires in the same positions then it should be plug and play. The red, yellow, blue and black are you power connections. The purple, green, grey and white are the speaker pairs with the black stripe being the speaker negative.

It's definitely not as simple as just pulling the plug and replacing. I've done many stereos over the past 10 years, and each one, all the while similar, offer differences. I wouldn't mind doing it, but I won't be in the area until Labor Day.

If you plan to try it yourself, just be careful with cutting any wires - once you cut them, it can be very difficult to figure out which wire does what. The hardest part is figuring out stock wires etc. - the new radio will have a diagram (very helpful).

Advice/Tip: you can use a Triple A battery on the speaker wires to figure out which speaker is which (usually solid color is positive i.e. white, same color with black like is Negative i.e. white w/black line). Touch one wire with positive battery and one neg. and the speaker it corresponds to make 'white noise'. This is a little trick I learned from a buddy - just makes it easy to tell where they go (makes your fade/balance correct once installed).

Good luck - let me know if you need anything!

you need to purchase the JVC different brand will not have same plug on rear. Use the keys from new hd unit to remove old one . This should not take 5min.

most head units today have the same color coded wiring....the speaker wires of the radios should be white ,grey, purple, and green....two of each. just take one wire of the jvc pigtail cut it and crimp the corresponding wire of the sony ...so on and so on..

Reedaville,
Denny up at Performance Marine does stereo installs. Done several for our campers. He is on Foster lane which is the first road on the left after turning left off of parkway at the traffic light at the Hospice building (sorry the road name escapes me).

Thanks everyone for your comments. I plan to take one more look under the console this weekend now armed with this info to determine my next step.

CampinMan I liked your thought as well. I am not familiar with Foster Lane. I think the road from the Parkway is Tiger's Way with UPS on the right and Hospice and USDA on the left. From Tiger's Way do you turn right (west)? Would Foster be before 914 on the left?

Its not Tigers way but the next traffic light towards Somerset on the Parkway. Going towards Somerset turn left at that light and then turn left on Foster Lane and Denny is at the end of that road.
