Heading to JRM this week...
My wife and I are dragging our boat down to the lake this weekend from northern Ohio and I'm looking for a little better idea on directions coming
from the north. Google Maps says take 27/127 out of Lexington however it looks like 75/80/Cumberland Pkwy would be the better route. Google says
staying on 75 adds about 30 minutes to the drive.

I would definitely take I-75, especially towing. Take the Renfro Valley exit (#62), follow 461 for approx 15 miles, then you'll take a right onto SR
80 (this turns into the Cumberland Parkway). Follow the parkway to exit 62, Russell Springs exit....head to the right. Follow this all the way to
Jamestown marina. Have a great trip!

I agree 100%. We made the mistake of trying 127 earlier this year and It added 1-1/2 hours to our trip... coming from cincy we made it to Jamestown
in a little over 3 hours which was the fastest we have ever made it. Cruise set around 76-79mph on 75...

Yep stay on 75 to exit 62 and head west.
We never really grow up; we only learn how to act in public.

I'm with all three posters above! The other if you have extra time and especially if you are not towing will work but the 75/461/80 route is the best
and most predictable. Can't wait till the I66 extension is done from Somerset to Mt Vernon area as it will be even better.

Thanks so much everyone! I suspected it'd be easier to stay on 75 a little longer but didn't want to find out I was totally wrong. This is our first
true "vacation" since our honeymoon 7 years ago so we're looking forward to a nice relaxing 5 days on the water! We're coming down with our 18' boat
and keeping it docked at Jamestown...any points of interest we "shouldn't miss"?

Sounds great!
There are lots of great places to see on the lake.
We have a slip at JRM.
You can head out of the marina and turn right to head west toward the dam. Lots of nice deep coves, and seeing the dam is worth the trip,it's about 8
or 10 miles. Should be plenty of other suggestions from the forum. Get a lake map and have a great time!

Hello mm430 and welcome to the forum!! Others will chime in here as well and since you will be centrally located to the big lake parts of the west
end you absolutely should check out Wolf Creek dam, Sid Bell/Family/Small falls (people call this particular spot a few different names), 76 Falls,
Mill Springs, Jack's Branch of Harmon Creek (the designated party cove since water levels have been down due to dam repairs-- previously 76 falls
area) or just pick a cove, anchor and enjoy the awesome beauty all to yourselves. Enjoy!!

WELCOME ABOARD!
Welcome to the Forum, mmoenter0430
Good advice above on getting to JRM. Just be careful with your speed after getting off I-75.
Also, before venturing out on the lake (if it's your first time), make sure that you have a map with you and pay close attention to your surroundings.
All those trees around the shoreline pretty much look alike --and it's a big lake. Make sure that you have enough fuel to take you where you want to
go --and get back.
Pack some food, LOTS of water and ice and sunscreen protection. Be prepared in case the weather turns wet. If you don't have a VHF radio with
weather-band installed, tune in to the local radio stations on the hour to get weather info and make sure your cellphone stays charged -and dry. Good
idea to leave word with someone where you plan to go and let them know when you return.
You are going to have a great time! Boat safely- we want you to come back often

Hello mmoenter0430 and welcome.
The directions to stay on 75 to Renfro exit 62 are right on. Take 461 to the dead end/traffic light at Rt 80 - turn right and follow Rt 80 THRU
Somerset. At the Rt 914 stop light/dead end, turn right toward Bowling Green. Continue toward Bowling Green (stay left) - follow the loop around back
onto 80 West. This little 1 mile jaunt has caused much confusion since it was created. Follow 80 west to exit #62 Jamestown/Russell Springs. At the
top of the ramp, turn right onto 127 and follow that through downtown Jamestown (round-a-bout at the center of town) and on to the Marina.
Enjoy your vacation - Wahoo

If you enjoy adult beverages you need to stock up before you get here...although it may be changing soon, at the moment it is dry in these parts.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy your trip!

Jamestown is a really nice marina with a very friendly staff. enjoy your trip. Can't go wrong once your floating on this lake.
You can never have to much horsepower or to much money, it's just hard to have both...

What makes you think it may be changing soon? I've been hoping that it would change for almost 20 years. Got close once.

Does anyone know when this will occur? I would love to see the new I-66 connect directly into 461. Can you imagine the time saved if you could
by-pass Somerset while travelling to Jamestown?
At 75 mph, No. KY to Jamestown could be done in 2 hours!

I can tell you one day 461 was shut down so I jumped off it and took some back routes from Mt. Vernon over to 70 and as I was headed along that way I
saw some building of a nice big road bed. I just looked at it on satellite and it does not look like much has been done but then again those images
could be up to 5 or so years old.
http://maps.google.com/?ll=37.356104,-84.402423&spn=0.02...
I don't know if what I saw was part of the I-66 work but why else would they be working on something so big in the middle of no where.
I'll be more impressed when we see more and more along a southern line of the 70 route.
Hopefully some forum member knows some details.

I just looked at your link. I see what you are talking about, but that seems awful far north of the current US 27 and Route 80 interchange to be
accurate.
Not trying to be pessimestic as I would love to see the 80 route go that far north and connect directly into 461. That would be a dream come true as
it would probably cut 45 mintues of drive time from No. Ky to Jamestown.
While i would like to see this, i doubt it will occur in the next 15 years.

I checked your link, that seems like they are just working on 150. From what I read a while back on the forum, I think the I-66 long range plans were
to extend the Cumberland Parkway east from Rt27 to connect into Rt80 just west of Rt461.
That would help with bypassing Somerset, but would still have to take 461 to/from I-75 north.

I would not mind this configuration. Nothing against Somerset, but running the stop light gaunlet on Friday afternoons gets pretty old, especially
when you have to stop and there isn't any cross-way traffic waiting.
