Gear Lube Brands

For Years I have been using Pennzoil Marine 80W90 Gear Lube in my Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen II. No problems at all as a result. My marine mechanic just advised against it. Said only use Mercruiser gear oil.
Can anyone agree or disagree with this or provide reasons?
I'll pay a little more for the premium stuff if I should be but this seems unfounded.
Thx

All I've ever used is the Merc HD. (Alpha 1 Gen II)

For no more than it takes, the cost is irrelevant. JMO

We have alway's used merc fluid. I figure they made the drive, who better to make the lube for it.

If the drive is out of waranty, and you believe in a product, who's to stop you? Konrad recommends Royal Purple synthetic. Pricey, but it has MOJO... the drives ship with it, and I use it. I do use Merc in my Mercrusiers, most likely because its readily available where and when I need it...

Amsoil says that their gear lube still maintains extreme-pressure protection even when contaminated with as much as 10% water.

As long as it is 80W90 GL-5 HP with limited slip you are fine. Try valvoline, but the Pennziol if fine also. I can tell you Merc is not making their own fluid.

Not sure about the 10% but it save my unit when I lost a seal. The mechanic asked what brad of fluid I was using because he never saw one run with that much water in it.

I was having a gearcase get extremely hot when I would run wide open for extended times. Called the dealer and he said he could send me a shower kit or I could try Amsoil. Changed the lube and it ran cool enough I could rest my hand on the top. That was my first experience with Amsoil.
