I have a couple old televisions, computers, and monitors. One tv is too heavy to carry put alone...any suggestions?

Some folks recycle and recover the valuable metals (gold) from them.

I saw something on the TV recently about how many thousand tons of gold wind up in the landfills each year from people throwing away their old electronics. It was a mind boggling number. People do recover some of it on a small scale basis, but so far they haven't come up with a feasible way to recover it on a large industrial scale.

I will give them to anyone who will come pick them up. The large TV takes two hefty guys to pick up.

You can donate them to the Goodwill store/Salvation Army/churches etc etc and take a tax deduction at the end of the year for the "fair market value". Thats a value you determine and its only questioned if you 1) go crazy and 2) you are audited.

Sometimes ( meaning call and plead with them) they will send a truck out to pick the stuff up if its a lot.

Throw some of you old clothes in that you no longer can wear, you know Lesiure Suits, bell bottom jeans, shirts with huge collars, etc etc

I try to do it every year and it has helped me a little with a huge tax bill plus helped some worthy charities help the less fortunate. :)

I would call Goodwill and/or The Salvation store before taking them in. When we were in Florida last year I took a portable TV with the remote and the owners manual ,worked perfectly, and they refused it saying they would only accept the newer digital flat screen TV's. I finally took it to a church donation center who would accept it only if I carried it in and proved it to work. All said they can not sell the older type TV's and other electronic devices.

Yep.. funny you mentioned that Old Goat. You are correct and particullary in FL for some reason. A friend in FL had a HUGE older but nice tv set and couldn't give it away. Had to pay someone to pick it up and haul it off. You would think the poor or some one would want a set if it still works. Everything is not high def and some channels are still available for free.

Sad honestly and makes no sense.

Added: Remember that "flatastic"?? :D:D

The old TV's are not digital and, therefore, require a converter box to work for over the air. I'm not sure if the modern cable boxes put out analog signals or not, but I would doubt if they do. So, the old TV's are basically boat anchors (and they don't hold very well at that!!)...

Goodwill and Salvation Army will NOT take them anymore here in the Central KY area. However, the Local govenment DOES accept them (if you bring them in). If you need to have them picked up it will cost you.

Check with your local government (ombusman, etc.) and see if there is a place close to you.

I've got several of the HD digital tvs but in some of the guest bedrooms I just put my former analog tv's and they work great with the converter boxes and it seems like the converter boxes were free if I recall correctly. If my guest (aka mother in law) wants HD they can go to the Hilton Inn.

I don't understand why folks with a limited or no income are being forced to buy HD Digital tvs that can only be used with expensive cable service.

(Don't get me started on cable tv! Grrrrrrrrrr)

The large TV is only 9 years old but I think the repair buy doesn't want to come back because it's too heavy. It doesn't work now. The smaller one is at least 33 years old and doesn't even have a cable coax connector. I may have to call the "Got Junk" guys and pay to have it hauled away.

Where I live in Ohio, if you put a working TV out on the street on the night before trash day and they dont last 2 hours....

In fact I put a 19" out last night and there was a truck loading it 30 minutes later...

Anything that remotely looks useable disappears.

Exactly SoccerBoater! Same here in certain parts of Lexington. You put anything of value on the street and it will be long gone in 30 minutes or less.
A nice analog TV will be playing the Spanish speaking channels before you can spell hacienda.
