when I upgraded I changed to Verizon. I based this on everyone (including my wife's Verizon service-based phones.) Here's the rub. Verizon service
for the iPad is non-existent as soon as you get outside of Somerset. The Verizon iPad services are not available on most of the lake. You can see
cell signal but absolutely no data connection. I'm really disappointed since the AT&T service for the iPad was not all that great on the lake but at
least you could get the Edge network to work. It appears that the Verizon iPad will not work on anything less than 3G where the phones will work on
the older data networks. |
lake4fun and Mojo,
You all both sound like you are experiencing what I went through with Verizon and iPad over the past year. I got an 3G iPad 2 with Verizon service
last year, and it seemed to work everywhere but the lake (which severely ticked me off because that's the one place I wanted it to work). Long story
short, it had to do with the fact that I signed up for a prepaid plan versus a monthly plan. With the Verizon prepaid plan for iPad, it won't give
you roaming service in the LC area. I had to contact Verizon and switch to a monthy plan, which now works fantastic - speed is great and have not had
any coverage issues on the lake. When I first bought the iPad, this whole thing was not explained to me by sales rep, so I had to kind of figure it
out on my own through trial and error. If you look at the Verizon coverage maps on their website, you can see pretty clearly that the LC area is
covered by 3G roaming. I did not make that connection when I first got the iPad, and definitely didn't know that prepaid would not roam. I can't
speak for entire lake area, but I'm at Grider Hill and I've found the Verizon service on the iPad to be very good - no complaints at all since I got
it working. I regularly use it to surf web, send email, upload pictures, use pretty much all my apps, etc.
PumpkinCreek,
I have had an AT&T iPhone (3GS first, then 4S now) for a few years now. I don't think I've ever gotten 3G service on the lake with it - has always
only been EDGE service. Talking and texting has been fine, but to surf web or use any apps that require Internet, I think you are SOL with AT&T.

Whoa!! That's interesting but I am on the month to month plan. I can drop it or start it any time. BUT I have "data roaming" to off. I wonder if
that's the issue? I was afraid I would get charged extra?? I'll have to try it. Thanks.

Yep, you HAVE to have data roaming on to have data on the west end. (Has not charged me yet, in fact I could almost guess you would have to get into
another country for that to kick in.)

My experience has been different so if anyone can help that would be great!
I have an android phone from Verizon and I spend my days at GHM. On my way to the lake my data shuts off when I'm on 90 headed west very close to the
space ship with the alien on top. When I'm returning home my data turns back on in the same location.
My phone is set to automatically change the cdma roaming, so I assume from that setting I have data roaming turned on.
I get good phone service while at GHM, but the data access has never worked. I have not tried rebooting to see if that helps. The lack of data
access is a minor inconvienance but it would be nice to have sometimes.
Thanks!

Some phones have to be rebooted, some SHOULD not have to be but many times will still need to be. My CasioGZOne Commando only had to reboot the first
time I made the switchover during transit, since then it has worked fine. My wife's Droid Pro seems to have to be rebooted every time in addition to
selecting yes to the question to allow roaming. Double check your roaming settings for data etc. as I think there are a couple places on some phones
that the stars have to be aligned just right. lol

Thanks E -- I will try rebooting after I pass the spaceship.
I have a Droid X and I have gone through the options and I believe I have it set to data roaming, but I might have a star missaligned

Yeah, I checked the settings on my iPad and can confirm I do have roaming turned on. Does not appear to result in any additional charges.

Thanks for all the reply and help.
I am thinking (a terrible thing, I know) that this just too much to nail down with simple questions.
It is all very confusing and I guess depends on your location, weekday and a thousand other variables.
SO...I made a command decision, based on your help. Bought an IPad with Verizon service. Only time will tell, but rest assured, I will report back
with my coverage and any other issues in the JRM area.
Thanks everyone
