Anyone else have a problem with bees this weekend?

We had a large group down for the 4th holiday, which included 10 kids. Our cabin is near Beaver Creek, and we first noticed the bees while playing in the yard. I assumed there was just a nest close by, but the problem continued all weekend. I noticed several people at the dock (BC) swatting at bees, and we also had a problem out on the water.

Just curious.

With the heat and drought I know every time I turn my sprinkler on several types of bees have been lighting on my concrete patio and getting in the puddles. I also get a big group of Robins that stand under the sprinkler water as well.

YES! My husband got stung, and as we were bringing the boat back in, our neighbors got stung. Then later in the afternoon some renters down from us got stung, they were awful after the rain!

Funny, I personally have seen very few, if any, of true "bees". I've always called them Yellow Jackets or Honey Bees. Yellow Jackets are the pesky little guys with the yellow bottom and black stripes. Honey Bees are usually a little fatter and slower and more tannish color.

Now I have seen quiet a few Hornets. To me those are the bigger guys that are black and orange and you don't want to get stung by those guys.

Squak maybe giving me another lesson in entomology here soon but that's what I've always called them. :D

WW is right - the offender I talked about in another thread is the Yellow Jacket - which is actually a member of the wasp family.

Problem with finding the nest, is that they usually nest in the ground. I got into some with a tractor and bush-hog when I was a kid visiting my Uncle's dairy farm for the summer. As far as I'm concerned, that tractor is still out there in the field somewhere.

Hate that eight mile drive home!

They were terrible on Friday and Saturday, swarming all over our tie up at the big cove on the east side of the lake just north of the entrance of Otter/Beaver. Last count we had was humans 15, bees 2. We may have won some battles but not the war. Not bad considering all the yellow jackets flying around.:P

We stayed in the State Park campground and they were HORRIBLE! This is the 11th year we've stayed there and I can't remember a year they were so bad. We talked to lots of people there and they all agreed they were bad. I'm allergic to bee stings, got stung by a yellow jacket (took a lot of benedryl and drank water) and was ok but wow, never seen it so bad. I did have my Epi. Pen but didn't need to use it thank god.

My friend slept in his boat with his Son, on the water not in the marina, and got stung while he was sleeping.

The last day we left, I saw the campground staff going around pouring gasoline on nests they could find. Phew.

We were out eleven days on Laurel Lake, no bees but several hundred thousand yellow jackets. They seemed to get more agressive with each passing day. We killed several hundred but you could not notice the difference. May be my last time tying up on the bank this summer, just float in a cove away from them

We stayed at Conley this weekend (as we always do) and saw around a hundred or so. Two of our friends were stung, the wife took a drink and spit it out on her dinner plate when she felt something buzzing in her mouth, turned out to be a yellowjacket, but she did not get stung. We met some friends on a houseboat and they were all over the top deck.

Is this what you folks are calling a Yellow Jacket? The picture below is a Yellow Jacket according to Waki-pedia.

I promise we didn't see any last week on or near my boat...just those big black and orange hornets. You folks must be near a nest or something.

We only saw a few honey bees, mostly around the docks, but the small yellow jackets where every where. After getting stung in the mouth a few years ago I am careful about watching my drink.

Saw a few yellow jackets but what I can't stand are those skinny blue dragon flies that are always attached. First year I noticed being bitten by them if they aren't swatted away soon enough.

Yellow jackets everyday. On of our dock neighbors was stung. At least several of us were bitten by spiders or stung through the week. We had yellow jackets, wasps and a few hornets that we killed. I swept up 3 or more about every day we were tied out.

Speaking from 10 years experience as a bee keeper, with up to as many as 70 hives at one time.

The problems people are experiencing with stinging bees is due to the drought. Most of the time bees prefer to visit flowers due to the pollination rewards, but when the flowers all dry up they have no choise but to visit the next best thing which is our sugar laden drinks.

Maybe next year will be better that this year!

YES...as a matter of fact we were discussing the fact that there were so many bees this past weekend. Whatever kind of bees they were, they were just little yellow and black bees, none of us got stung, but they were very annoying and would not leave us alone.

Makes good sence RELAX... We had a ton of those little trash can buzzing little trdz. One sad, discarded Bud bottle must of had 15 in the bottom. I'd imagine that we all need to be careful not to get a drink of yellow jackets....
