Houseboating Conditions In Coves

Hello Every One,
I have been watching the fourms for a few weeks and decided it is time to contribute. We have our first houseboat trip confirmed for later this month. I know the water is down and don't see that being a problem. We knew up front. My questions are, will we be able to get into the coves and will we be able to find waterfalls? We are taking my bass boat and will be able to go shallow with it if we have to. Is there a map to show us were the water falls are at. This is our first trip to the lake or to stay on a house boat. We are counting the days down and can't wait. There is 2 couples, we all need the vacation. Thanks for any help!!
Hows that for a first post?

Hello maxbmx!! Welcome to the forum. You picked the right spot to get answers, there's a huge wealth of knowledge on the site and from the long term members....I'm not capable of posting links to maps, photos and the like, I'm 'puter-illiterate, but I can steer you to the falls if I knew where ya renting the houseboat from...?? The lake is down but still very large, 100 miles long, so we need a starting point!!
Others will post here soon, I'm sure, and we all can confirm you're gonna have a great time, either chilling out and quiet time or even a loud party time, it all depends on what ya looking for!!

WELCOME ABOARD!

Welcome to the Forum, maxbmx
Great first post!

There are many threads on this Forum about first houseboating trips and they will likely save you a TON of trouble and anxiety if you read some of them before you arrive. Kinda hard to dig them up right now on this iPad but, if nobody else posts them for you, I will when I get back to my PC.

And, about those beautiful waterfalls.... Sorry to disappoint but we have been in a sustained drought, so I suspect most of them are spilling dust about right now:(

ADDED 7/3/12:
Check these threads before your first houseboat trip:

Excellent first post maxbmx! Welcome aboard!

You'll have no problems finding a cove and getting tied up. Thousands of easily accessible places. Use the bass boat and scout out a good location first. However a cove with a "named" waterfall ... forget bout it. You might find a cove with a waterfall if you get there early and do some searching.
A lot depends upon when the last good rain was. Lots of runoff and of course you'll see more waterfalls. Right now the selection is slimmer due to drought conditions.

Good luck and hope you have a great vacation.:)

My questions are:
- will we be able to get into the coves
Answer: Yes, there are gillions of them still available. Just take your pick.

- will we be able to find waterfalls?
Answer: Yes, there are several around the lake. The most visited ones
are Seventy-six Falls and Sid Bell falls. We are in a drought right now,
but we are hoping to get some rain soon.

- Is there a map to show us were the water falls are at.
Answer: See Map Below and welcome to the forum.

Maxbmx, welcome! You have come to a great place for answers. I can't tell you how much I have learned from everyone on here. Everyone is helpful and eager to talk about one of their favorite things, boating on Lake Cumberland!

This will be my 11th year renting from State Dock. It's a good choice. We've always had a great time and the boats are nice. Glad you are bringing a smaller boat with you. You can see a lot more of the lake that way. There's plenty to explore.

Don't worry about being able to find a cove. There's plenty. We usually send the ski boat ahead of the houseboat to scout out a good
spot. Look for some good stumps to tie up to and then nose the houseboat between them and tie a good knot! The last thing you need is a gust of wind blowing you free!

I'd also advise that several of your houseboaters go on the Captain's Lesson with you. It's a new boat to you and there's a lot going on. It's good for several people to know how to start the boat and/or generator, how to check your fuel and water levels, fill the hot tub, etc.

Have a fun time and be safe!

Welcome to the forum. If you get there in time there is a nice cove just around to the north east of State Dock/Jamestown Harbor that has a Waterfall (when there is rain/water) and is deep enough but you will need to be good at driving the houseboat as it could be tight in spots. Click link below

http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=36.9...

You might want to go to Google maps and take a virtual cruise around the lake looking at coves etc. Pay attention to the distance gague in the bottom left so you can tell how many feet wide a cove is etc. If the banks look steep more than likely the water is decently deep.

Well I took the map out and it worked. Funny, I have posted those elsewhere and never had a issue. Going to resize smaller and try again.

...updated, tried smaller and did not help either. Odd as it has not been a issue in other threads. For this thread I took the map out and just placed a link so things could get back to working. lol

A couple things to remember.

Water is not unlimited.

Be very careful what you flush into the toilet.

Remember a houseboat is very slow. Take note of how far you run away from the dock and allow yourself ample time to return the last day.

If you have people who take long showers, you WILL run out of water. Most house boaters bathe in the lake then take short rinse at the swim platform. That's one of the great things about Cumberland's waters.

The houseboats at SD will take a SMALL amount of TP. DO NOT, and I repeat DO NOT allow the female passengers to discard their hygiene products in the toilet. You will not have a pleasant trip if the crapper gets clogged and they will charge you heavily to un-stop you.

That last day it is hard to untie and head in. Many times the amount of time and speed are miscalculated and you wind up coming in much later than your scheduled arrival time.

Lastly, being a boater used to higher speed running. You may get impatient at the houseboat speed. No matter how fast you run the engines, you are not going to get any more speed and will gulp down a lot of expensive gas. Ask your instructor what the sweet spot or RPM is and run at that.

Those are great links Capt., they should be condensed and posted under the main page sub-section about houseboating!

Good suggestion, Soak.
Actually, many of the ideas (and more) are in the "User Guide" that was here for many years. Like other links, it was taken down during the recent changes. Hopefully, the Wizard will be able to re-link it very soon.

Max, when you arrive to check out the boat, insist on watching them top off the fresh water. Every time I do this, it takes them another 10 minutes to finish filling the fresh water tank. They always try to tell me they already topped it off. But alas, they did not.

I want to thank everyone for their help. It is Friday morning day 5 of our trip. We have been alomst one end to the other. We made it to the falls at Otter Creek, Seventy Six Falls, we tried to make it to Burns Marina but gave up, its just to far. We stopped in a little cove at the end of Cub Creek. When we got nosed in the girls were happy we found a small fall. It rained hard last night and I think more is on its way. We got early to head back and found the small fall is now a large fall. The trip has been great it is time to head back to State Dock. Every one was correct, we will be back!!
Again thanks for every ones help!!
