Photos of First Boats
Just a little humor to enjoy.
Number one, 1964. I was 13 years old..
This was a little plastic suntan display I kept bugging the store Manager to sell to me. I made the mast out of old broom handles and rudders and
sails out of old scrap plywood and sheets. Needless to say it didn't function well on the water but provided endless hours of imaginary sailing on
the sea of grass.
What a geek I was back then with that funny Sailor cap. (Well, E might think I'm a geek nowadays too and I don't even own a Sailor's cap)

I give up. AAArrrrrrraaaaagggggghhhhhhhh ! ! ! ! !
Screw it, I have done EVERYTHING the same as last time and it still tells me the image is too big after using the resizing link. I'm going back to

Here's Mearly's pictures and they are way cool.
PS The files he emailed me were all within the size limits as far as I can tell. I really don't know why they wouldn't post. Strange one. Please keep
in mind I'm no computer guru.
Good ones Mearly

The first one was the one I tried to describe in the opening post.
The second one is one I built in 9th grade shop class. It kept trying to sink till my Uncle taught me how to fiberglass tape the seams. This one I
got kicked off of Houston Woods buzzing the sailboats. The Ranger accused my Dad of changing the decals of my 6hp motor and using them on a 10 hp.
This pic was actually taken that same day when I was thrown off the lake.
The third one is a Utility Hydro I built in 11th grade. It first had the 6 hp then I found the Mark20 and put it on so I couldn't take it to Cowan or
Houston Woods. This is on the Little Miami River running along side of I-75 in West Carrollton.
The fourth one is running on the same river behind the old Boat House owned by Salt Walther where we hung out as kids. He finally hooked me up with
an outdated 280 class three point Hydro of which I can't find any pics. of.
The first plastic boat I was forced to leave up in Canada off of Lake Ontario after my Dad forbid me to throw it back up in his runabout where I had
snuck it in on the trip up to Canada.
The others I came home from my Freshman year at EKU and found Dad has sold all of them because he wanted his garage back.
I put many miles on these. In the old day, I probably would have been crazy enough to brave the Burnside / 76 trip and would have most likely have
made it. The Old Man would have most likely come looking for me as he usually wound up doing and towed me home all the while just shaking his head...
I have more memories of at least the latter two to last me a lifetime. My childhood was spent anywhere I could float on something. My most "lapse of
good judgement" memory is when I came home one day with the last one with a coating of ice on it and me. January in West Carrollton was not a good
time to be boating on the Little Miami River...

PS: WW I have a old pic of a water patrol boat that meets all the parameters as well and it will not post no matter what I try.

If I had been around that in '72 you wouldn't have been able to get close to it because of all the "drool".

Wow that's a nice ride there Watt Money. I remember seeing a lot of those around the lake in the old days. Glastrons were great boats.
Email me the pictures if you want and it may take me a minute but I will get them up for you. You may even have to send to another email address. I
think Nearly did both but the yahoo account goes to my cell phone and pictures don't up load well there. Give it a try.

years old when I bought them. No wonder I'm always working on them. But I do like the looks of the older boats better than the newer ones. Yea that's
why I have old boats.

My first boat was a raft I built for a week long family camping trip here on LC (40+ years ago) across from Beaver on Tent Island. I named the raft
after the infamous raft; Kon-tiki. After reading about how Thor Heyerdahl and his crew crossed the Pacific, it was all I could think about.
Great program to learn about the expedition.

My first "boat" was a Lays Potato Chip boat won in a raffle when I was 8 years old.
It looks a little something like this and is in my attic.
My first REAL boat was a 1965 Mark Twain

I built my first boat, a hydroplane just like Nearly's white one above, in my basement and "almost" couldn't get it up the stairs and past the
landing!!!! Almost.
I bought a blueprint out of an old magazine or somewhere and went to building it. It takes 2 pieces of 1/4 plywood screwed together, a gusset here or
there and then a seam of fiberglas matting on the edges. Then a brushed on coat canary yellow marine paint and it was ready to go hahahaha
Then I found an old steering wheel and used motor that almost broke my bank, not to mention was a hard starting SOB, and I waited alllll winter to
take it to the reservior.
We set it on the ramp, got it gassed up and everything ready. I slid the boat in the water and headed it outward (Im not stupid you know) pulled the
start rope til I was ready to puke, and then..........it fired up. Ran OK, but it did rattle a little and belched up lots of smoke, so after reving it
several times it was do or die. I jumped in hammered the throttle hard and simultaneously began feeling cool water filling my jean shorts!!!!
It did NOT sink, mostly because I jumped out and had to swim the whole rig back to my good buddy laughing his azz off on dry land. The boat was loaded
in the van and later sold to an unsuspecting guy at our next yard sale. Dried and shined up or course, and Im sure I lost 60-70% of my money, but it
was G-O-N-E.
Thankfully, there are NO photos available to screw with here.

PS. I weight a couple pounds more then Nearly does, or ever did for that matter, so don't laugh its not a fair comparison.

My first boat was an old dresser drawer pulled from a dump in Canada. I would reach my arms out over the sides and try to paddel to the raft anchored
out in the river before it sank. Our Neighbor caulked it for me and thet was never a problem again
I've gotten a little bigger since then and for some reason have always needed a bigger boat. I Thank the Lord I have such a wonderful Wife who
understands my love of boats

Bouy234.... After I started teaching shop class, I actually had 4 of my students build these. I don't know if any are still around or not. We did
keep improving as each was built. A little higher sides and we actually put two in one once. If memory serves me, that plan came from Popular
Mechanics..

I used brass screws and the fiberglas edging and even made the front air tight, but it wouldn't take the strain my butt put on it. Even back then I
was probably 190 or so.
Maybe if it had gotten a good running start??? hahahaha
The good thing is once I bailed out, it stayed up. Thats the best I could hope for.

Here's my first one, even though Bayliners usually get a bad wrap, it never gave us any troubles whatsoever in the two years we owned it. Which is
quite rare for a boat!

Dang that's a nice first boat TBAG.
Well, I got no pictures of my first boat but that's a good thing.
When I was 7 or 8, my brother, cousins and neighborhood kids all saved some of our allowance, returned hundreds of pop bottles for .02 cents each,
etc. etc. and rode bikes to "Greasy" Grimes Junk Yard with the enormous sum of $5.00. I was the leader and ol "Greasy" about fell out of his chair
when I told him we wanted the top/roof only of that 1956 Chevrolet station wagon in the yard. He got such a kick out of it he said "sure" and
proceeded to get the cutting torch and cut her off. Turned upside down that station wagon roof looked like a LST landing craft of WWII and floated
just as good. Luckily "Greasy's" location was close to the N. Fork of the KY river and we just made our maiden voyage right there back to our home
port (behind the house). Propulsion was a long pole/stick and we moved along Ala gondola style.
We had a complete blast in that thing for many summers until the river rose a little higher than expected one night and she was gone. BUT if anyone
ever wants a cheap river boat...remember station wagons are the best, convertibles...not so good.
WHATEVER floats your boat Dude!
