Crossing The Lake In a Dinghy

I just got a 9.6ft inflatable with a 6hp Mariner.
It is about 55 miles from Burnside to 76. 110 round trip.
Not sure what the cruising speed on my boat is yet, lets say it's 13mph for now until i lake test it on GPS this weekend.
It would take 8.46 hours.
Could be the greatest adventure of a lifetime! Or of the weekend...

Anyone else have a small boat of any type and want to join me?
Like a dinghy run.
Time and date TBD later

Wow!! That would be a pretty ambitious trip in that small of a boat. Do it during the week when the lake is not chopped up and make sure to take enough fuel to make it at least to the next marina.

Could be the adventure of a lifetime, or a nightmare!!

You won't go very far in that little rig on a tank of gas and you certainly won't get there very fast. We owned one of those rigs -for one season and one season only.

IF you do try to make the trip, allow a couple of days, make sure that you carry plenty of drinking water and energy bars, keep a fully charged cellphone or battery-powered VHF radio close-by in a watertight bag and wear your PFD at all times! Most of all, check in with friends or family at regular intervals.

Your trip, while a great adventure, is also potentially dangerous. Small inflatables are not comfortable for long periods of time and they always hold surprises. Best of luck!

you need a few friends to anchor out along your route just for safety checkpoints to make sure that you progressing. It's a really cool ideal.. I did it on a seadoo back in 97 but i wasn't doing it for the trip i was going from one party cove to the other. It's a long haul, figure out how far you can make it on a tank of fuel then figure out if you will be passing a marina for at least a couple of your fuel stops, that would limit the amount of fuel that you need to carry if it worked out right.

You can never have to much horsepower or to much money, it's just hard to have both...

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...but, a true friend will be

As a kid, I had a 10’ Achilles inflatable with wood floor boards and a 7.5 hp. I put a 6 gallon tank in the bow in front of the inflatable seat. Dang thing would run forever on 6 gallons. With just me, I guestimating it would do in the high teens, maybe even 20ish. The thing was a hoot and impossible to flip. Down side, it was gray and hard for other boaters to see it. It had a bright orange spray deflector on the bow that was a necessary piece of safety equipment.

I covered every inch of Indian Creek, Middle and West Fork, Browns Creek and most of the main lake up to the mouth of Beaver and Otter in that little boat. Keep in mind that I was a teenager and would probably choose a larger craft at my current age…… I say go for it…

The above post has nothing to do with this topic id say.

Anyway, yes it would be on a weekday, possibly a friday.
Tiny 6hp outboard gets good mileage. I have a 6 gal tank, so a second 5 gallon tank gives me 11, thats long range cruising capability .
Take a hand held radio, a camera, cell phone, cooler, map, sun tan lotion, maybe a foot pump

Im thinking it would be more fun to cross the lake once then get a ride back.

I rode in an 11ft boat in the 2010 pwc poker run from conley to state dock and back. That round trip only took about 2 hours and i felt like i was travelling alone becaise all the skiis were much faster and left me in the dust.
Luckily we got the best poker hand and won 1st prize.

Kurtincincy, Go for it! You will have something to talk about for years. I once talked to a lady that took a canoe from Cincinnati to the Mississippi River. Would love to have time to do something like that.

Kirt,

When I lived in Miami I had a lot of fun with a 16' inflatable Zodiac.

It had aluminum floor boards, transom and an inflatable keel. I had a 55hp Johnson tiller short shaft which would really push 4 divers with gear anywhere you wanted to go.

Have cruised from Carysfort to Molasses light in search of bugs, many a day in the upper keys. Have been offshore way past the sight of land with confidence, or maybe just stupidity who knows. :P

Good luck but be prepaired and you will enjoy your adventure!

Couldn't help myself....Actually you could "cross" the lake easily with just a paddle. Now "running the distance from Burnside to 76" would be quite an undertaking. :P:P Sorry couldn't let that one rest..:P

This would be quite fun getting a bunch of the lake dingies and making an adventure out of it. Put a limit of say a 10 HP and 12 FT. A "Kicker Regatta".

Don't forget Capt. Bob's handy lake chart if you want to plan a detour...

Doing that trip on a SeaDoo would be an adventure, no way I'd try it in what you are thinking about.

We often go from Lock 5, thru Lock 4, all the way to the top of Lock 3 and back on a Saturday on the Kentucky River in a slow Pontoon. That trip is 60+ miles, and we don't even get to drunk to drive while doing it. :-)

It's the stupid 50kb "Pixel size limit" on this site that is giving you trouble. I still have no clue how to change that without making the picture as small as an avatar.

Most computers have a "paint" program that can resize pictures but it is a pain to learn so I use the program that came with my digital camera. You just have to have seat time, so to speak, and learn how to play with the program to make it work here.
