Laurel Lake Friday morning.
Officials say dispatchers got the fire call just after 7 a.m. Firefighters from the Oak Grove and Bald Rock Fire Departments responded. Officials say
crews pulled the burning houseboats to the Craig's Creek Boat Ramp to keep flames from spreading to neighboring vessels.
LEX 18 has a crew en route to the scene. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Got a phone call this morning with the terrible news. The boat in slip 70 also got some damage. He is a member of our forum. Otis.
It's a sick sick feeling. You never want anything like that to happen to people you know, or even people you don't know for that matter.
We are close friends with the owner of one of the boats that got destroyed and it's a relative of Otis's. He put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into
that boat. He tore down the inside and rebuilt it from scratch. He was finally able to enjoy it a little bit last summer.
The owners of the other two boats are still of course friends and marina family. Connelly and I had just re-carpeted one of the boats maybe 2 summers
ago.
Awful just awful.

A fire destroyed three houseboats at the Holly Bay Marina on Laurel Lake Friday morning.
Officials say dispatchers got the fire call just before 7 a.m. Firefighters from the Oak Grove and Bald Rock Fire Departments responded. Officials say
crews originally planned to tow the burning boats to the Craig's Creek Boat Ramp to keep flames from spreading to neighboring vessels, but ended up
simply pulling the smoldering boats into a nearby cove.
Officials say the flames also caused some cosmetic damage to four other boats in the marina.
Firefighters say it took about 20 minutes to put out the blaze. They say battling the fire was tricky on the narrow docks.
The Kentucky State Police have called in arson investigators, but officials on the scene say the extensive damage to the boats may make it impossible
to ever determine the cause.

Arson investigator sent to Laurel County houseboat fires

Herald-Leader Staff Report
Kentucky State Police has sent an arson investigator to the Holly Bay Marina on Laurel River Lake where three houseboats burned to their hulls early
Friday.
A police spokesman said the U.S Forestry Service contacted the London police post and requested the investigator.
Randy Lawson, manager at Holly Bay, said a night watchman spotted the fire about 6:30 a.m. Nearly three hours later, the fires were extinguished
except for some hot spots.
Marina workers pulled the burning boats out of the slips so they would not set fire to other boats, Lawson said.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fires had not been determined, Lawson said

OK, just got back from the marina.
While this is a shame for the owners of these boats affected, it is a case where the marina and the fire department did everything pretty much
perfectly.
One boat started on fire. The fire was spreading to the neighboring boats, so marina crew moved the next two boats to create a fire break.
The fire department was on scene within 20 minutes of the call and began applying water and foam. After most of the fire was out, marina crew moved
the burnt boats to the ramp right at the marina, not Craig's Creek.
There was some damage to the dock, but not terrible. The was some heat damage to nearby boats, but all appeared cosmetic.
While we were there on scene, the steel hulled boat with the slide you see in the LEX18 pictures sank right there at the ramp.
There was a second steel hull boat that was gutted but did not look to be in danger of sinking, which was along the shoreline near the ramp.
Then there was an aluminum hulled boat sitting alongside the ramp, totally gutted with melted hull sides sitting in inches of water.
Henderson Boat Repair is on the way to remove the boats still floating from the water.
Not sure if we will go back to get the sunk one or not at this point. Time will tell. The owner is away.
I would say all these boats were less than 60' in length and all with outboard engine power. It appeared all fuel and oil were consumed by the fire,
so no sheen on the water at this time.
This was a great response by Holly Bay employees and the local fire department.

Those pictures are a sad sight. Its a shame that that had to happen to such good people.
Awakening....as far as I know, Six Pack Summer came out unscathed. Otis went down this morning to check on his boat, and said that he couldn't see any
damage on ours.
As far as Otis' boat goes, I am surprised, and glad, that it only has the damage that it does because his boat was docked right beside this boat:

Not sure which boat was on fire first, but there were a couple 30lb propane gas cylinders in the cabin area of the boat that sank. You can see them
in the full sized pictures I have.
Not saying that was the cause here or that this was the boat that started it. This was just an observation.
NO PROPANE IN THE CABINS!!!!!!
Should ONLY be stored OUTSIDE.

Marine Assist,
Did the steel hull boat go down fast? How come they didnt hook a chain to it and drag it up on the ramp? Seems like that would be easier to recover.

Well, the Forest Service was there as well as the fire investigators. They had the ramp closed off, as you see.
In this particualr case, I was there at the ramp about for only about 15 minutes or so. I watched the boat go from having about 4 inches of freeboard
to sunk in that time, but the boat had been there for a while before I got there. There was no trailer available around that quickly and those in
command were not really wanting to drag that boat up the ramp until there was some containment boom deployed around the area, due to the fact all the
water would rush out of the hull with the debris, uncontained. I guess it was a hope it would stay afloat until the trailer, and containment boom were
in place and the hull pumped some. As you see, as water starts coming in, it escalates pretty quickly. Those pictures are taken no more than 5 minutes
apart.
Remedies do not happen quickly when it comes to this stuff.
As for the chain and dragging it, this was a steel hull full of water. It is pretty heavy and once you start going up the ramp, the stern would sink
anyway and be stuck right there, unless you had a heck of a big towtruck, etc. Once on the ramp, then what? It would be a while before anyone cuts it
up for scrap, especailly is part of an investigation.
There are just really no good quick fixes sometimes, you know?
