STANFORD — The body of a Stanford man was recovered from Cedar Creek Lake Saturday evening, about six hours after he jumped in to rescue his young son.

Searchers found the body of John Sallee III about 5:45 p.m. Sallee was in a small boat near the boat ramp with his son, John Sallee IV, when the boy, 9, fell overboard about 11:50 a.m., said Lincoln County Emergency Management Director Don Gilliam.

Witnesses said the boy was able to make it to shore but his father disappeared beneath the water. People on the shore threw flotation devices toward the elder Sallee but he was not able to reach them, Gilliam said.

The two were apparently fishing.

“It looks like it was just a father and his son out enjoying the lake,” Gilliam said.

The boy was taken to Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford and then transferred to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington. Gilliam said the boy’s vital signs appeared to be good and he is expected to recover.

The water is about 25 feet deep where the two went in and the water temperature was 58 degrees.

Crews who arrived on the scene shortly after the incident spent a couple hours in search mode before their efforts turned to searching for the body. Efforts were hindered for much of the day by choppy water caused by high winds that made it difficult for divers to see and made sonar less effective, Gilliam said.

A dive team and boat from Pulaski County were brought in to assist with the search. Gilliam said the Pulaski watercraft has a kind of side-view sonar that can be more effective in calmer night waters and it was used shortly before the body was found.

Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum planned to perform an examination of the body to determine if Sallee perhaps hit his head or any other factors that may have contributed to his drowning.

Gilliam said the wind was strong enough to cause two-foot waves around the time of the incident. Those conditions and the small size of the boat may have contributed to what happened, he said.

The boat did not capsize and crews were able to retrieve it along with Sallee’s clothing. Although the top of the water was moving rapidly, Gilliam said the search was concentrated around the area near the ramp, which is close to the dam along U.S. 150 about four miles east of Stanford.

Lincoln County Search and Rescue worked with Pulaski County Dive Team as the main agencies carrying out the search effort on the water. State Police, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, and local law enforcement and emergency responders were also on the scene late Saturday.
