Considering a move to CB

I think I'm going to make the jump from Brookville lake to CB for 2012. Looking for some input on which piers I ought to consider. I have a 290 sundancer. 31x9.5. I like a social dock.

Thanks in advance.

BB hands down for the "social" dock. I have some good friends that define the term social. Location...connected to the main marina and bath houses. AA is hands down the best location for lake access but it gets the blunt of the wakes...R, S, & T are the closest but to short for your boat. (I had a 290 in R dock)

Now for the bad news. CB doesn't put up with a lot of so called "social" activities so you might want to consider Jamestown or State.

Nearly is correct on a couple of fronts for sure.... BUT there are social activities going on at Conley nearly every week however they are not "organized activities" like at State. No live bands every weekend or things like that, but on occasion there are "marina wide parties" out in front of the restaurant. AND trust me they do "crank it up" over there on BB and AA on occasions. No one says much about it either until after 12:00 or so.

Further away and quieter than the spot Nearly suggested is at the beginning Pier 6 (sorry don't know the real designation YY ?) and they already have 2 SeaRays over 50' there and a couple of 40's and others. They seem to have a good time over there and if you know "Charley" on "Aquaholic" he plays some great tunes that we can usually listen to on Pier 7. :D

Nearly is also right about the wake...I won't go into details but I, and several others, have a major issue with one particular cruiser at the present time. Like I said we have several 50' cruisers there and they are NO problem. Respectful, knowledgeable boaters and they cause no harm. However this one guy in a Maxium creates a 5' roller every time in comes in the harbor. One time...I can forgive it, it happens...twice your an idiot driver with no brains - learn to drive correctly...three times...as Bill Shakespeare said "its time to take arms against this sea of raising troubles and thus end them." He is on quiet a few "list" at Conley and some of them are cruiser people. He has caused some damage on more than one occasion and did some more this Sunday.:mad::mad:

Anyway Mojo we would welcome you at Conley. Great marina, with great folks boating there, and some really great people managing it. Good value for the money and a great location. I recommend you visit several marinas first and make up your mind. They are ALL good on Lake Cumberland, it just depends upon what you like and are willing to pay for. ;)

PS Sorry for the rant. I feel just a little better now. My very injured vertebrae and sprained ankle still indicate otherwise but the Tylenol is starting to kick in.

Thanks all for your input. When I said "social" I was referring to having slip neighbors who will actually say hello and visit occasionally and if they like to have a beer here and there even better. I didn't mean I need a dance floor with DJ speakers cranking til 3 a.m. Nor do I care for a loud obnoxious disrespectful people. I'm a boater at heart and true boaters know how to have fun and conduct themselves. At least the ones I know. It's the crowd who borrows dad's boat for the weekend and bring all their friends out that I can steer clear of. Now on the flip side I've seen boaters who don't want to even look at you, won't help getting into slip, [Censored] about everything and if it's not dead quiet at 10pm they're calling the marina. It's just like neighbors at home. There are all kinds. But with slips at least you have some options!

Not interested in driving any further and CB has always been our favorite spot.

I'll check on availability for next spring and go from there.

You'll fit in fine!

I have the same size boat on pier 1, E dock at Conley right next to the lighthouse. The front of the boat sticks out about 3' past the roof but really that isn't a big deal to me. At $1550 a year including electric, cable and water I think it's one of the best deals on the lake ( hope Charlie or Fred doesn't read this). We have a great group of people over here that hang out together at the dock and on the water. But I know there is a waiting list so if interested you might want to call soon. Like WW said come on down you'll fit in just fine.

PS I was on BB dock before I moved and it is a party with a lot of good people. I was in an open slip and wanted a roof over us but didn't want to pay $3200 a year.

We never really grow up; we only learn how to act in public.

Mojo,
Mrs. Captain and I were at CBM this weekend visiting with some very nice friends. If the hopsitality they extended was anything like a " typical" CBM'er, then you are in for a welcome treat.;)

One thing for sure, CBM has an excellent Location on the Lake.

Hello everyone. Well, interesting turn of events. Last fall I decided to sell my boat and buy a new house. So I didn't do anything about a slip. Then spring came along with a flood of pretty good offers on the boat. I got cold feet. Impossible to replace this boat with what I have in it so I'm keeping her and now scrambling for a slip!!!

I plan to call on Monday but if anyone has the inside track on a slip preferably covered let me know. I promise Im a great neighbor. Thanks.

"O" dock. Gonna pretty isolated out there.. Might be the safest place to be. ;)

I made the move this year also. Coming from Jamestown. So far, it has been great. Plenty of open parking with short walks to the docks, incredibly friendly dock mates, and halfway between SD and LFM.

Yeah I know. I stayed down there as a transient a couple times. Availability was sparse, I didn't want to pay the over $3k rate at this point and I don't stay at the dock very long. Seems like a shorter walk to the car too. I'm use to being able to park very close to my boat.

Ok, so the boat went in last week and I need a little advice on setting up this slip. I was surprised to find no dock cleats? What's up with that? Those rings a pita. Is there some rule against installing them? Also, the end piers with those lockers are basically useless. How do you all tie your boats up up front? I have 5 feet of finger that's pretty much inaccessible. Not to mention the huge metal brackets that I need to cover up on the corners of the fingers. So, this will be an adjustment. Any additional help will be appreciated. Oh yeah, gutters? I see those. Should I install one or will the front of my boat get filthy from roof rain water?

Thanks. Will they install cleats if asked? Not a fan of tying off to those rings at all.

When I asked Fred for cleats he told me to mark where I wanted them and they installed them that week.

As far as the metal corners. We bought dock rollers and installed them due to the wave action. But, I am surprised there are not rubber corner rub rails already installed.

As for the bow cleats, if you walk the docks you will find a lot of lines tied high to the 4 x 4 post above the lockers.

A word about the gutters... A lot of my friends installed the gutters due to their boat hanging out past the overhang. One thing to look out for. Make sure your anchor locker drain is working properly. If the drain is clogged, all the heavy rainwater hitting the deck may fill the locker and flood your v-berth through the locker access. This happed to some friends more than once that's why they installed the gutters.

Again, I would ask Fred and usually he is very accommodating.

I can see why you wouldn't be fond of those rings Mojo. They don't inspire a lot of confidence especially for bigger boats but I have never seen one come loose. If they do just call over to the marina and tell them and I'm sure they'll work on them.
I "think" (but don't really know this) the reason for the rings over cleats is IF your on a major walk way there the cleats can be real toe grabbers. Like Xburnside said call the marina and maybe they can help you but I imagine its an insurance or COE requirement to have rings there instead of cleats.

I'm not sure what your talking about with the metal brackets. Probably part of the structure and can't be moved. You can tie a fender there if you worried.

On the gutters...again I don't know but you will definitely get a lot of water hitting the front of your boat. Maybe someone (Mearly Satisfied) can comment on this but if you can get a gutter up there its probably a good idea.

One suggestion, and you probably already know this, but tie up in a "bimini" manner or cross ties like in an X. Don't tie up perpendicular to the shortest distance cleats.

Good luck and enjoy. ;)

I've taken 6" firehose and wrapped it over the end of the metal angle on our HB slip. I have seen several long scratches on the HB's sides as the result of these angles. The rubber bumpers quickly rub off when a HB gets pinned against the dock when comiing or going. I still have a piece left if you are interested. I believe that the marina will replace these if they are missing from your slip.

Thanks again for the information. I'll talk to the people at the marina when I'm back down there to set up cleats. I do have the small corner bumpers but I think if my boat really got pushed into one it wont hold it off the metal. I'll install a couple of the big fender style cut out type that mount on a corner and will extend down below the metal.

Yes, my bow sticks out but my anchor locker is covered by the deck hatch. But I'll still get a piece of gutter to keep heavy water flow off. Thanks!

I know what you mean by the deck hatch. My Bud's SeaRay had the same type of deck hatch. The problem was there was such a volumn of water, the drain couldn't keep up, that's when the locker flooded and ran into the v-berth. Just a precaution.. ;)

Just to emphasize again what WW mentioned. Cris cross all your lines and use spring lines to keep from ripping your cleats out. It does get rough out there, especially if the Blue Water out of Lee's Ford is still coming by on Sunday afternoons.. His wake sometimes would come over the docks. This happened for years and this guy was either totally oblivious or didn't give a rats a$$ about anyone but himself and his wake.
