Docking at State During Events

Hello Folks.

I know a lot of you come to State Dock during some of the many activities and come by water.

There are what seem to be a lot of open walkways in which to tie your boat. Unfortunately this is not always the case. You should always check with one of the Dock Hands or the office before you walk away from where you tie up.

The areas particularly in mention are the walkways further back that join the sets of houseboat and Cruiser slips. These areas appear to be clear but what one has to realize is that these clear areas are needed for the end slip holders to maneuver their boats in and out of their slips. There are many transit areas out in front of the gas piers where the rental houseboats normally tie and some along the main walkway just to the left when you enter the harbor. Typically, there are no transit slips past the first row of docks and this area is considered no transit or private to slip holders.

There is always the exception back beyond the first row but I would not take it for granted I could tie up my boat and leave it back among the slips, it could possibly not be there when you return due to the Marina having to move your boat so others can access or depart their slip. Never leave your boat tied outside of the designated transit area without asking the slip holders around the vicinity if that area is clear or not.

There are times when a slip holder will allow use of their slip if they plan to stay out overnight. Our Contact states that any such use must be approved by the office and slip holder, and said boat must be registered with the office.. There are no open slips at State so if you see an open slot, this area belongs to a slip holder and one should never assume he can pull in and tie up. If a slip holder arrives at their dock they are in their rights to have the marina move the boat and tie it where they deem fit. The marina will not be responsible for any damage caused when moving said boat.

Generally, there are several areas to tie up and visit. Just look around that area you tie to, scope the probable use of that area. And, if in doubt ALWAYS ASK..

You just have about captured all of the private sector with the exception of the gas docks. Most of the transit docking is to the right off the picture.. Now go back and take another shot to the right,, ;)

Isn't that the where the rental houseboats normally park?

I've never had a problem if I park along the row before the rentals and just next to the gas pumps on the left side. I always park close to the end in case they need to use the first gas pumps on the left but I have never seen anyone use those pumps but smaller boats.

Sometimes (I believe this to be true, please correct me if I'm wrong!) its OK to park for an hour or so in the vacant houseboat slips but I wouldn't stay there very long without asking.

WHATEVER floats your boat Dude!

The houseboat slips on the outside are almost always empty on Saturdays because the boats are out till Sunday. And yes, the slip out from the first gas dock is good to pull in on both sides, I would leave about two boat lengths so the smaller boats can get in and out of the pumps. You can usually get by close to the workout room in front of Cat Daddy. IF he needs to get out the dock hands are close by to move you if needed.

They have plenty of it where we have been describing. Now If you know people who have boats around the areas E marked in red, and they are not going to leave their slips, I have seen many of their "guests" docked in these areas. My point was that boaters have docked in these areas and blocked boaters from attempting to exit or enter their slips. The Cruisers can ofter maneuver around them but the houseboats have to have most of that space to swing into or back out of their slips. The area just in front of the workout room usually is available if Cat Daddy doesn't need out and there are transit slips inside of the first row of rental slips along and beside the restaurant patio area, then like I mentioned on Saturday, the houseboat slips are often empty and will be till Sunday so a lot of boaters tie up there.
The area behind the rental slips or where E drew the red line, is basically reserved for slip renters so there are technically no transit slips in that area. Like I also mentioned, if you pull up in those areas and ask around you may find the boaters who need that area for clearance will not be departing and will say your are clear. It's just a hit or miss area and if you leave your boat for a long period, it may need to be moved. Kind of like if you park on the street, you wouldn't block someone's driveway but if the driveway was at the home you were visiting, there wouldn't be an issue.

As far as hospitality, several time boaters have been there for some of the more popular events that ran late at night. I have heard Bill get on the mic and invite boaters to stay put, at "no charge" as a matter of public safety. Especially if it seems some have partied a bit.

Is the row where the helicopters park all transient slips, or are some of them year-long contracts?

We've tied up, even during the Poker Run, at this spot and never had a problem. Last year we had three boats tied up together and the dock workers said it was fine so long as we left plenty of room for person's wanting to use the first gas slip.

I believe there are some transits on the store end but the helicopter end is reserved for the helicopters. In between these are some smaller covered slips but I don't know if any of those are open.

Lol, I could see it know...someone ties to the helicopter dock, one lands, cushions, floats, towels, wigs, are strewn about the harbor:D

It is comical to watch people stop to watch when one comes in. This un-knowing couple in a fishing boat got a little unexpected ride..."sideways" :D
