Lakefest starts this week!

Lakefest tradition continues with some changes

Lakefest 2011 kicks off this coming Wednesday and it promises to be a doozy.

As has been traditional, the kickoff will start with community worship on the square on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.

There will be music provided by Driven, featuring Adam Hill, and a great community gathering to give praise for the opportunity to gather and celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

The following day, everyone is invited to come down and participate or cheer on your favorite lip syncing contestant or talent show contestant.

Some may decide to showcase their particular talent to the accolades of friends and family. This very popular program starts at 5 p.m. and everyone who is someone is sure to be there.

Friday will be the Lakefest Beauty Pageant but this year competitors should be aware of a major change.

The contests of Tiny Miss and Mr. 4th of July, Tiny Miss Lakefest, Tiny Mister Lakefest, Miss preteen Lakefest, Jr. Miss Lakefest, and Miss Lakefest including all contests for ages from 2 years old to 21 years old will be held Friday beginning at 5 p.m.

The Beauty contest for babies, ages 0 months to 24 months, will take place on Saturday morning beginning at 9:30 p.m. in the air conditioned Nazarene Gym.

Also on Friday will be the annual Lakefest Golf Scramble at Lake Cumberland Golf Club, formerly The Links at Lilly Creek. Golfers may sign up for the golf scramble at Jamestown City Hall or at the event scheduled at 1 p.m.

The main stage will be set again this year in front of the soon to be former Russell County Courthouse, as it worked out well last year.

Saturday will see a full day of activities for the entire family starting as early as 6 a.m. as everyone is invited to come have breakfast with the Lion's Club at Jamestown Café.

Those up for it can join in on the Mike Hill 10k run starting at 7 a.m. with the children's fun run then starting the main event at 8:15 a.m. Both events start at the square.

If that's a little early or breakfast with the Lion's Club is still settling, there's still time to catch the Antique Tractor Show at 8 a.m. at Jamestown Elementary.

At 9 a.m., an opening ceremony will be performed at the main stage to commemorate the occasion and kick off the rest of the day's program, which includes; the baby pageant at 9:30 a.m., children's games, a cornhole tournament beginning at 10 a.m., and the very popular pet show at 11 a.m.

At 12:30 p.m. the vehicle parade starts with the antique tractors slowly winding their way around the square followed by the able care of one of Russell County's biggest classic car enthusiasts, retired Dr. James Monin who will describe the classic, antique cars in the parade.

This event is always popular and many trophies will be awarded

Yes, let's not forget the Jamestown Square will be closed off for the holiday again. They call it lakefest, but cut off easy access to the lake... go figure.

It doesn't say it above, but the country band "Little Texas" will be performing as well, according to the radio spots.
