Lake Cumberland Map

This is a little bit off topic of the debris post out there, so i created a new thread for it. Most of you veterans of the lake and forum know all of the lake landmarks well, but some of us newbies might benefit from knowing exactly where Low Gap, Cemetery Island, Shinbone, Ramsey Point, et al are. The creeks, marinas, and boat ramps are usually well marked on most maps you pick up anywhere around the lake. My question, is there a map out there anywhere where these other area landmarks are labeled? I'd like to pick one up if so. I've already learned through these forum posts where most of these places are, but would be great to have a map that labels them all.

8-26-2011 - NOTE, Keep scrolling down as there were multiple updates to the map after this post.

If you have a fast internet connection this is one I created years ago from County Road Maps that I put together. I had to shrink it a little to get it under my web interface's 50mb upload limit but here it is. I put some new labels in it since the old ones are hard to read after shrinking it.

I'll try to update tomorrow with Shinbone etc. If someone could send me GPS coordinates of places they don't see on the map I will use yahoo maps to pull the spot up and then will transfer that to the location on my map. ;)
http://lakecumberlandboaters.com/files/LakeCumberlandMap/lak...

There are a couple more located at http://lakecumberlandboaters.com/files/LakeCumberlandMap/ as well some of which I converted to jpg to get smaller but they are not a crisp. I love having the road names legible to look at as it puts the lake in perspective better.

I just noticed the old Alligator I dock location I listed is about 300 yards too far north but hey I placed that back in 2006 when I was still pretty new to LC

Just a example in MUCH smaller form of what is linked above.
Whew replaced the linked 10mb file with a small version
As you can see it has Laurel, Cumberland, some of Dale and some of Green. Yes this example is blurry but that happens when you shrink that much data.

Good map E but still needs some work, Shinbone, Sid Bell Falls, and some of the cove names. I know you had another map with some of the coves marked need to incorporate them together.

That's great... thanks E! Exactly what I was looking for. Please repost in this thread if you get updates for areas that other veterans suggest should be added.

Some of the coves have different names based on different experiences from who has named them.

Yep, not sure what I did with that one but I can update this one. I can handle the shinbone location but I sure could use some help wiht Side Bell, Little falls, etc. I think I know where Governors cove is...

If people can give me gps points like I did in another thread for Shinbone for someone that would work great. If not if they can send me a marked up screenshot that would work too. lol Of course Squak may already have this complete but I would still like to update my old map as I like having it with the road names etc.

Hey E_
I downloaded your 48.8meg map. I converted it to a user-friendly GIF file @ 8.54 MB.
If you want I can send it to you ...

I kept it as bmp since it loses some of the clarity as anything else. I have a few gif copies, jpegs, etc. that I have done but it still blurrs some stuff when I zoom way in. However I can upload it on the site for safe keeping if you want just send it to my forum name @ lake cumberland boaters.com with no spaces. Sorry I just never type it out on open forums if I can help it since bots grab addresses.

You oughta see the 58MB bitmap version when printed full size on a wide format printer. There are a few lucky forum members that might still have a copy of it on their wall somewhere.

@ 2:1 zoom I don't see any difference in it other than the color loss in GIF. (Back when I had a whopping 210meg HD I got away from BMP)

Somewhere on a drive I've got a HUGE map of Cumberland from Williamsburg to Wolf Creek Dam that I was stitching together , it was getting to the point of being to much to work with. I was using aerial photos.

I like BIG maps too ! Makes good wallpaper :D

lol,

Here is today's edit I did this morning before heading in to work. I have added Shinbone Cliff, the Rock House, and made some of the points of interest more legible.

I just love zooming in to the map and looking over the area surrounding the lake. Things like LuLuBug Town, Pumpkin Chapel, the Corbin Speedway, Jones Mill or Graveyard Hollow are all net things to see where they are in relation to where we are when we are on the lake.

NEW EDIT LINKED in text below

You may want to just right click and save target as. Yes it is huge but if anyone wants to compress it for their storage that is up to them. I just work with the bmp as to not loose as much clarity after save after save after save. ;)

Also if you have a edit you don't have to work with the whole map. Like I said send me a gps link to yahoo maps like this one for Shinbone for example
http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=h&lat=36.964973&lon=-84.869756&zo...
What I do is zoom to the spot then right click on it and select "drive from here" and that marks the spot. ;-)
OR you can copy and save just the section from the map you want updated like below for example

Example.JPG - 37kB

That is great stuff E! I wasn't aware of the 'other' Clifty Creek up near Lee's Ford. I know when the water is back up that there is another party cove just past Woodsend Bend, don't know if it has an official name, to us it's always just been 'party cove'. For the more daring, there are some good cliffs back in that cove for jumping off. Went up there when the water was first down, very interesting to see what was left behind on dried up lakebed.

I never did see Cemetery Island called out on any of those posts. I'm pretty sure that is somewhere in the mouth of Beaver/Otter Creeks, but could be wrong. A couple of other landmarks that I was curious if they had names:

1 - There is a sharp bend up Otter Creek where people jump off of cliffs. Does that have a name? If not, do I get to name it? :P
2 - A little further back up Otter, there is a really nice waterfall, I imagine when the water is up, it might even be under water. After a good rain, it's a very nice spot to drop anchor and chill. Be careful if you go back there, water gets pretty shallow about 100 yards from the fall. Curious if these falls have a name as well.

I don't know about you guys, but all this lake talk has me ready for summer... I'm heading down tomorrow! Annual houseboat trip with some buddies. We will be up in Harmon trying to see what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into. Watch your outdrives boys and girls, sounds like with some of the submerged logs, it's gonna be hairy!!!

So some GPS coordinates for the places I mention above as you requested E:

1 - Cliffs @ Otter Creek (36.835072,-85.039443)
2 - Falls up Otter Creek (36.806859,-85.026536) I think this is the right location, but not 100% sure. Based on the boats all anchored there, it must be!
3 - 'Party Cove' near Woodsend Bend (36.938205,-84.622059)
4 - Where my brother in law tried to kill me on a tube last year (36.889636,-85.050955) :)

Alright, I'm off to get packed up. Everyone be safe this weekend!

I know of the cliffs, but have never heard them named... The falls are Sid Bell's Falls or Little Falls or Family Falls. I think Sid Bell's Falls is the actual name...

5-25-2011 Update

Ok Chillaxin, updates have been made:

Right Click here and save target as to download 5-25-2011 version of map

...and yes I got the date in the file name wrong... lol :D

Here is a smaller jpg format of ONLY Lake Cumberland Between Highway 80 and 90.
Click here for smaller jpeg map
It lost a little quality but might be easier for some of you to view. Depending on what it opens in you might need to zoom to 100% to be able to read it.

I found a really good map of LC here:

http://www.sportsmansconnection.com/

My buddy also gave me a very detailed map that is over 70 pages called "The Lake Cumberland Boating Guide" that was produced in the early 90's by Donald Forsythe. It is very detailed but is not in production any more. It one of the best maps I've seen it actually describes the shorelines and etc.

I've tried to find the author to get permission to re-print it and have been unable.

I sincerely appreciate all of the effort you all have put into putting this info out there. I downloaded most of this into my Iphone Navionics app. We found Sid Bells (Little Falls) this weekend with friends and had a great time. It also gives us some other coordinates to explore on the lake!

A friend of mine has a blank wall approx. 10' H x 14 L and wants to put the whole lake on the wall. He would like to have it painted but that may not be feasible, but what about a company that can do this on a wall paper type medium and then it can simply be applied like a wall covering.
He is looking for medium detail but obviouly wants creeks, lake locations (Sid Bell Falls, Shinbone, marinas, etc) cities, towns and roads around the lake area.
If anybody has any experience in this area or knows someone that does, please let me know either here or a U2U. Thanks!

Try www.fathead.com or maybe a local company who does vinyl vehicle wraps. You would have to provide your own picture or get a photographers written permission before having a company reproduce an image for you.

We were looking for a giant topo map a few years ago and couldn't find anything that suited us so we made our own. We took 18 topo maps, 7.5 series, 6 across and 3 down, trimmed the borders off of each map according to it's location then taped them together from the back side. We found a place that could laminate up to 30" wide and had 3 rows of 6 maps each laminated. Then we taped those 3 sections together from the backside and ended up with a map about 10' wide and 6.5' tall that we attached to a wall at our lake house. It may not be the smoothest most professional map ever made but we have a very detailed map of the lake from west of the dam to well east of Burnside. When we have guests visit who are not familiar with the lake it's easy to point out our location and what areas we may have played at during their stay.
