Dog Bitten By Copperhead

Just wanted to let everyone know that the snakes are active due to the high water (might be obvious to most)...they are being pushed out of their homes and getting closer to houses, etc. My lab was bitten by one on Saturday. I rushed him to the Midway Animal Hospital in Somerset where he got treated and hospitalized overnight. He's got a swollen arm but will be ok.

Be careful out there.

By the way - the Midway Vet was AWESOME Doc Hutchison there was on call and came in to treat my little guy. She was as good if not better as you could ask for in an emergency. HIGHLY recommend them after this past weekend.

Here's a picture of his club arm:

Poor thing, hope it gets better soon. I always keep bacon grease in the frig. and will feed the animal 2 tablespoons of it when the animal has been bitten.

Jabez, I too had a black lab that got hit twice on the same leg several years ago. Came in limping during a rain storm, thought is was a thorn until I saw the swelling. Ran him into Russell Springs, vet gave anti-imflam's, took a couple of days but after that he was doing fine. Never really ventured far from the house after that.:) Feel sorry for your pup.

Other than just as a treat, I was wondering about that too. Be sure to save some of that bacon grease for the soup beans.

Well during the 2.5+ hours I was there on Saturday afternoon, she determined where the bite was and what it most likely was with the symptoms. Then she gave him a pain med injection which seemed to help very quickly. then antibiotics, then steroids, then put an IV in him for fluids. She pushed some more antibiotics or steroids (can't remember) through that. She also did blood work on him to make sure his platelets weren't depleted, if so then it most likely was a rattlesnake and we were in bad shape. She also took his vitals several times, temp, BP, pulse to make sure nothing was abnormal.

She also prescribed 2 antibiotics, a pain pill and a steroid for us to give him for several days. PLUS - she called me on Sunday to check on him and let me know she forgot to give me the steroid pills while i was there so she called it in to a pharmacy in Lexington for me to pick up. Again, Dr. Hutchison at Midway Vet Clinic/Hospital was OUTSTANDING!

An update: he is doing MUCH better today, arm is almost back to normal size, still some redness in the area but he's making a very quick recovery. Proud of the little guy. :)

If I didn't live all the way up here in Lexington I would switch to that vet because of my experience, seriously.

I'm glad to hear that she is on that list.

My dog's name is Ralphie (yes, from A Christmas Story).

You are welcome, I just hope that this will help the next person if possible. I don't know what in the world I'm going to do when kids come along if I freaked out this badly over my pup. ;)

It's one of those old timers remedies, and I have seen the " bacon grease" trick work on a lab I used to have.

Probably quite a bit cheaper but I think I'll probably rush back to the vet if it ever happens again! haha.

No doubt, but on a Sunday afternoon out on the water, it might be nice to know!

Could someone post the phone number and address of the Vet in Somerset?

It would be nice to know if my best friend was in trouble at the lake.

Should have done this from the beginning, here is the info:

3236 S Highway 27
Somerset, KY 42501-3031
(606) 679-7319

The facility is located at stoplight 20. If you are coming from the parkway side and driving south, you have to go to stoplight 20 pull a u-turn and come back to it.

Thanks for the info. We often beach our pontoon and let our dog roam the banks. He loves it. Glad to know there is a place close by that can handle a situation like this. Hope you lab gets better soon.

Our toy fox terrier got bit on the side of her face by a copperhead a few years ago at the lake. I killed the snake and after several phone calls to area vets on a Sunday, my wife found one that would see the dog. The rest just told my wife to give the dog benadrel. I loaded the dog, snake and hysterical wife in the truck and went to the vet's office in somerset. He pulled up at the same time we did, First question I asked was for him to look at the snake. Yes its a copperhead he said. Second question I asked was, whats up with the benadrel. He said that dogs are either allergic to the copperhead's venom or they are not. If the dog was allergic, it would have been dead before we found the phone number. The benadrel helps with the swelling. He took the dog in and gave it a good check over, several antibotics and a pain shot. I asked how much we owed him and was shocked when he said $35.00. I thanked him, handed him a $100.00 bill and left. His office was next to the motor lodge as you come into somerset on 80.
