Tourists making lake their destination

By BILL MARDIS, Editor Emeritus Commonwealth Journal The Commonwealth Journal Wed Apr 06, 2011, 07:00 AM EDT

Somerset — 66,429. Carolyn Mounce, executive director of Somerset-Pulaski County Convention and Visitors Bureau, asked members of the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce to remember that number as she began a presentation to the April membership meeting of the chamber.

Truthfully, nobody in the crowd of more than 200 could recall the exact number at the end of Mounce’s talk. However, they did remember when she told them that in 2010 there were 66,429 more visitors to Pulaski County than in 2009.Mounce didn’t mention problems at Wolf Creek Dam or the fact that since 2007 Lake Cumberland has been kept about 40 feet lower than normal to facilitate repairs at the dam. Mounce is fixed on the attraction of Lake Cumberland as it is –– 35,000 acres of beautiful water, still the third largest lake east of the Mississippi River.
