Very interesting, you going to post a reminder when the date gets closer?
116 miles? I could do that on a tank depending on speed etc. Do you all normally stop at a marina or two for lunch etc. along they way?
More than likely I would not be able to go but it still sounds like a great experience. I only have a few river miles from a trip I took on the KY
between locks and back so I would love to learn about the anchoring and navigation differences of river boating vs lake boating.

It's a weekend trip Spare. Sounds like good time, might have to pull the Pachanga up there and check it out.

Cumberland River is Even Better
Those of you with trailerable runabouts...forget the Ohio and the commercial traffic. The Cumberland is much more serene.
I highly suggest this "long day" run. Fo more info U2U Slowboat.
Put in at the Obey river in Celina TN - You will launch from Donaldson Park launch ramp. The Obey is the outflow of Dale Hollow. The navigable
section of the Cumberland starts about 2 miles upstream of the obey, so you have a guaranteed 9' pool in the cumberland once you make the short 500
yard "crawl" from the ramp to the mouth of the Cumberland. Make a left hand turn into the Cumberland and proceed "down stream".
Get a copy of the Cumberland River charts from the US Corps of Engineers before going and make sure to keep the bouys on the correct side - Don't
forget the correct side changes when you return up stream!! RED-RIGHT-RETURNING. I use green and red post-it notes to keep things straight.
There are several marina with restaurants. Look in the charts last couple of pages to find the list of facilities and the associated mile markers and
phone numbers. Quimbys crusing guide is another good investment.
There are virtually zero boats on this section of the river and no commercial traffic (tows w/ barges) to worry about.
If you have the time you can go all the way to the first lock and dam - but I don't recommend using it as it takes 24 hour advanced notice to get a
lock master - it is normally un-attended. Besides just getting to the dam and back is a FULL day.

"Bass" boat with a 40HP Johnson with no problems.

sounds like a adventure to me, I just have been too reserved to do it myself especially with family and friends counting on me but with a group of
experienced boaters I would love to give it a go...

As would I. My main reservation would be not having a cuddy or any way to get out of the weather if needed and for overnighting. I may have to wait
until I decide to get a full enclosure made for the toon.
The cumberland trip sounds fun, but I always have a thing about going down river then back up. I prefer to do it the other way.

When I do an overnight in my deckboat I always take a large tarp along that I can toss over my bimini top and clamp down around the rails. This makes
for good protection and is much easier to put up and take down than a full enclosure.

Being an ole river rat...
I've made the run from Ripley to Cinncy several times. Ran from Ripley to Portsmouth to see the 'painted wall' also.
There are some nice marinas in the Cincinnati area also. When we went to Portsmouth we spent the night in a national park near there. Had a great time
and the wall is a must see.
...and the barge traffic isn't all that bad.
ready for summer!

day trip from Ripley

Yes I have, and it's quite a site! The last trip we made,a couple years ago, it was raining so hard, I could barely see the channel markers, so we
just motored on by. Way back in the early 80's, there were 3or 4 boats from Dayton that went to the river. We put in at Eagle Creek at Ripley, and
skied and tubed all the way down to Portsmouth. We stopped at a dock, I think it was owned by the Shawnee Boat Club, could be wrong on the name, it
has been a few brain cells since then. Cost us 5 bucks a boat to tie up
overnight. We stayed at a Holiday Inn at the top of the hill. One of the members of the boat club had an old Chevy pick up, and he took all of us and
our coolers and stuff up the hill for 20 bucks and a couple of beers. He even came back the next morning to take us all back down the hill. Nice folks
on the river.

We might have crossed paths.
I actually had a 5th wheel at Chief Logans Gap up in Eagle Creek. Was there form early 80s to about 1996.
We (about 6 boats) normally would load up early on Saturday and head up to twin islands. (Manchester,OH.)
Had a great time on the river. With the setup I had, we were
usually down about every weekend.
ready for summer!

If memory serves me right, I believe it's 52 miles. There is one lock between Cincy and Ripley. Makes a nice trip.

If you do, go ahead and run up to Aberdeen/Maysville. It is not that far and a little more scenery. Can't miss it with the bridges that cross the
river.
