CVB aims for new ways to market the lake!

New campaign will begin in January
by Tricia Neal
The Commonwealth Journal Sat Nov 13, 2010, 07:00 AM EST

Somerset —

Lake Cumberland may be low, and families may be more focused on Christmas shopping than boating, but the Somerset-Pulaski Convention and Visitors Bureau is already looking ahead to successful summers in the sun.
The CVB has contracted with Kirby Stephens Design to create a new, exciting marketing campaign that will promote Lake Cumberland now — and in the near future, when the water levels in the lake are expected to return to normal levels after repairs to Wolf Creek Dam are complete.
“When the lake comes back, we want to make sure tourism is shining,” CVB director Carolyn Mounce told members of Pulaski County’s fiscal court Tuesday morning.
The new campaign will begin in January, and Mounce says advertising will be “full speed ahead” by the time the lake returns to normal levels within the next couple of years.
While the lake remains the area’s main draw, Mounce made mention of plenty of other activities in Pulaski County which have successfully brought tourists to the county in 2010 — and several more activities in the works for 2011.
Agritourism has continued to be popular in Pulaski County. Standards such as Haney’s Appledale Farm and Bearwallow Farm are still heavily visited. And this year, newcomer Cedar Creek Vineyards hosted an Art in the Vineyards event, which proved to be so successful that organizers had trouble finding places to park all who visited.
In 2011, Pulaski County will host The Maverick Club’s annual show and the Miss Kentucky Teen America pageant.
Mounce said she and her staff will be traveling to several boat and travel shows in 2011 to continue to promote the area to potential visitors.

I'm not saying that a campaign would be a bad thing when the lake is back to normal. But, I don't believe at this time that the lake's level has anything to do with any drop off which we may be having. I think at this point it is all economy.

This would be a very easy promotion. Vote in wet counties, Open three floating Hooters Bars. One at Burnside, one at Conley and one at State. Tourist attraction problem solved. JMO :cool:

Maybe it's just me, but I still don't see what is wrong with the lake at the current level. You can actually get out of the boat on the shoreline, unlike before.

Personally, I think if people would quit talking about "when the water comes back" things would improve greatly.

I would much rather have shoreline that is usable than having the water up in the treeline again.

Agree with Quickie:
- Biggest cause -------------It is the economy STUPID!!!!!
- (Mortgage crisis, unemployment, job jeopardy--not low water)
Agree with Marine Assist:
- The low water lake has created new shorelines, new islands & has a HUGE amount
of deep water available to all types of recreation , boats of any size, houseboats & can serve the huge special crowd events .

We have dozens of threads, stories & pictures of the year around beauty, deep water, hundreds of miles of shoreline available RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

WHAT LAKE CUMBERLAND STILL DOES NOT HAVE IS THE ORIGINAL RAMPS , ADDITIONAL RAMPS extending
into the lake during the times when water is near 680 or below...THAT GUARANTEE - EASY-LAUNCHING/LOADING.

Several posts/threads have been made over the low-water years --
about the condition or absence CERTIFIED FOR EASY USE ramps during low-water periods.

At the west end - the Clifty Creek road ramp is IMPOSSIBLE TO USE right now.
On other ramps I have seen posts that talk about drop offs, poor conditions.......

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER IS:
GET THE DXXX RAMPS CERTIFIED AS READY FOR LOW WATER TO 670 ft.
- HAVE FEDERAL COE SIGNS CERTIFYING EASY / SAFE ACCESS FOR BOATS OF ALL SIZES.

THEN ADVERTISE THE HECK THAT THERE IS A GUARANTEE -EASY-ACCESS RAMPS FOR ALL BOAT USERS.
- Take pictures
- Create a website/indicate ramp/show pictures
- Have an ALL DAY news media reporter bus tour in April driving all the way around to each CERTIFIED ramp....
- Have an ALL DAY houseboat tour for the same people in May showing the BIG, DEEP, BEAUTIFUY LAKE that is now here.
- Let these BRAINWASHED news media members in each nearby city tell the story after they have spent the day -
BUS TOURING , BROWN BAGGING & BOURBON DRINKING!!!:P

One more comment:
I am dismayed at the continued DISCONNECTS on the BIGGEST ISSUE that causes
the most headaches for boaters.......

It is RAMP LAUNCHING / RAMP LOADING........

I live in Cincinnati and my friends, relatives, strangers all ask the same question
when Lake Cumberland low-water is discussed..........

How easy is it to get into the lake??????????

I wonder if those paid trips to the boat/travel shows this winter has anything to do with it!

Amen ProVie!!!!

(Self-perpetuating programs justifying job, advertising payments & lack of lake-user surveys......)

I am betting that a company like P&G would first seek opinions, input of laker users of all kinds.

Procter & Gamble survey/advertising people would probably watch this LC.com forum carefully and they would probably invite a few dozen LC.com members with houseboat, ski boat, fishing boat, shoreline hiking, island camping experience!!!!:P

Just wondering????

Do Convention employees, Carolyn Mounce or any employee of Kirby Stephens Design or local politicians ever lurk on LC.com???

Before anyone launches a new ad / tourist campaign.....
I suggest they conduct a LAKE CUMBERLAND USER FOCUS THREAD / SURVEY on LC.com.

They will get the facts from hundreds of lake users....from all major cities!!!
These lake users can provide the most accurate, timely user input on as small boat, big boat, houseboat, fishermen, campers, hikers, Poker Run, Guiness event experts.

Bottomline for me:
- Owned a lake home for 30 years
- Have never had a more enjoyable year on the lake.
- I am speaking for a family 5 kids, 9 grandkids, guests that
have enjoyed small boating, big boating, houseboating, sking, fishing, camping, hiking & big water event participation.
- They all will come back next year ....even after struggling with our nearby low-water ramp issue.

I like exploring the shores as well but if the lake is not raised the tree line will just move down in most areas.

Its not the trees, I think Don means the cliffs. Right now you are not into the cliffs everywhere.. Even Shinbone cliff right now has shoreline. ;-)

MarineAssist & Weedbeater have some great ideas.

I'd like to see the lake about 10 feet higher, putting it around 690 feet to get some more depth at the ramps, but it doesn't have to be all the way up to the tree line.
Next, a wet vote in the surrounding counties, bringing sportsbar-type establishments to the area, specially the docks.
Just my wish list.

The Lake doesn't need too much advertising. I think the constant improvements in the Marinas (at least in most cases), is money well spent. Somerset also has some nice hotels now.

One thing that may be missing is a real alternative for the area. Not sure what that could be but, I think of Branson, with Table Rock Lake or Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. The area around LC has just as much to offer. That could lead to more jobs and some economic benefit, leveraging the Lake but extending it to other area.

Personally, I am a bit selfish and I like it the way it is and I would be happy never to see it go back up. The shoreline is awesome now.

I love the shoreline. Better fishing, easy to take the dog to shore, beautifully rugged. We need to improve all ramps, thats how the majority of visitors access the Lake. If we could get 690-700' it would be perfect.
