What would you do if you had an emergency at Laurel Lake
Alright Laurel Lake friends, we haven't had our own thread in a while so I thought I would start up a discussion about something I have been wondering
for a while. This past summer a member of my wife's side of the family had a major heart attack. They spend a lot of time at Laurel Lake and luckily
they were not at the lake at the time as help was only a 5 minutes away. But it was a big deal and it made me think a lot about medical emergencies
at the lake. What would you do if you had a medical emergency at Laurel Lake? Call for help on the radio? Try moving the victim to the dock? I
don't have cell signal at the lake so my lifeline is the radio. How far away from Grove and Holly is the nearest hospital? Is there a D-Fib (heart
zapper) anywhere at the lake? What would be the role of the KDFW? What are your (KDFW) limitations? What would you guys (KDFW) suggest as a course
of action?
Now that I have 2 kids it makes me wonder about those types of things more. Gosh I feel like my old man

Fortunately, Holly Bay has the AED. That is what you call the heart zapper. We are blessed with an outstanding EMS service in Laurel Co.
Unfortunately, Laurel Lake is in a rural area and response time is longer. Air ambulance service by two companies locally.
There is no substitute for first aid provided by bystanders.
CPR is a lifesaver. Many of our marina employees have been certified.

Lucky-Enough, do you know who at the marina is trained in the use of the AED? Or if they offer instruction to the residents at the marina?
From time to time, my work offers a lunch time class on AEDs, I guess maybe its time to sign up.

The nearest hospital depends mainly where you are on the lake. It could be Corbin, or London.
Cell Phone reception is very poor overall, with some carriers being even worse.
Each Marina does have Marine Radios, and monitor 16 as well as their operational channel. Remember that the marinas are not always staffed, and
there may not be anyone there to hear you.

Pleasure Island,
AED training is included in CPR nowadays.
It was my understanding ALL marina staff were CPR trained by Randy's wife.
The person who you are most likely to use CPR on is your friends and family. Makes sense---- who are you most likely to be hangin with ?
The emphasis is now on breast compressions.

Just curious but is there a designated landing zone anywhere around the lake? I would assume Rick's landing pad doesn't count.
How organized is the AED deal at Holly? Say I bring in someone who had a heart attack, who would I see about that? Dock people I guess? Don't get
me wrong, I think it is great the equipment is there, but I was just curious who would actually take that responsibility or if that had been
discussed.
We need one at Grove.
One of my friends that goes to the lake with us often is certified at CPR training. Wonder if there would be much interest in all of us who aren't
certified getting trained.....maybe even do it at the lake prior to the weather really getting nice. Any interest?

Pleasure Island, I'm First Aid and CPR certified.....and they do train you in AED's. However by mid afternoon I'm not sure I'll remember. Maybe we
can do a practise section on you this spring

Laurel and Whitley county frequently use the Spillway , or the fields just towards Holly Bay from the spillway as LZ's. Air Methods and PHI have
been to both enough that they have the GPS on file.

All of the above is good however....
If you are at the marina you may have a chance but if you are out on the lake the chances of surviving a major medical event are slim and and none. By
the time you got off the lake and the emergency crews got to the lake from Corbin or London you would probably be out of time. It is what it is.
Just the price of having a good time at the lake and as much as we discuss it there is little we can do to improve it.

Guess I am fortunate that I have an ER Doctor as a neighbor at Grove.
How did you guys get an AED at Holly? I wonder if we could rally the troops and get one funded at Grove? I'm willing to hit the ground running and
work on getting everyone behind it at Grove if I had more info.

WELL, something that beneficial to lake users could put you in line for a 3rd one.
We'll just have to wait and see what your competition is that day.
The AED's are great and could be a lifesaver and every marina should have one... BUT don't forget the CPR courses.
They are just as important, if not more so, in a lake situation.

I think I am deffinately going to get certified for CPR this year. I am long overdue.
I mean heck, right now I have a only a few options at the lake and one of those is CPR by Another Round . I'm just saying boys, if it is between my maker and Another Round's lips I say let me pass on to the other side and
pour out a 40 oz on the horseshoe beach and say "he was a good homey"

AEDs are great tools.. but if no one is around that knows how to use them.... then you guys over at Grove might be better off investing your money in
a better cell phone or radio...
I asked the question about HBMs AED training because I have images of some poor old fart like myself flopping around the dock... chocking on a chicken
bone... and some very well intentioned person lighting me up like a Christmas tree with the 9.2 gigawatts out of those paddles... because they didn't
know what was wrong and used the only tool they had available. (or worse yet, visions of one of my "friends" thinking its a funny way to end my
mid-summer nap with a little shock theorapy... seems like Another Round is already planning this one ).
Seriously though, I don't mean to question HBMs dedication to training their staff in emergency first aid... but, they already have a lot irons in
the fire and unless it becomes a very high prioity, their training will be forgotten or lost to employee turnover.
Its a great gift that HBM has one... they should make the thing readily accessible and get the word out to their customers, so they can be self
trained as much as possible...
Hopefully there will be someone around that knows how to use it (except AR) the next time I eat chicken.

If the safety and well being of the Holly Bay residents are in the hands of Another Round then we are in worse shape than I thought. Nothing worse
than being attended to by a peson who is concerned more about not spilling their beer than your well being

You are correct about being on the lake vs at the Marina.
It is always wise to know where you are, and where the nearest ramp is.
For example, Marsh Branch ramp is rather close to London, and 312 or Hightop are close to corbin. You may be better off to have an ambulance meet
you at the ramp, than go all the way back to the marina..

Goldwing, let me know what we (Grove peeps) can do to help. If it is a matter of funding, I am sure I could pull people together to get one.
Do they make one handed AED's.....Another Round could zap with one hand and hold his beer in the other
