Buck Creek / Omega Dock damage

The recent rains and heavy winds has again done a lot of damage to Buck Creek / Omega Dock. It is reported the roof collapsed over the houseboat covered slips, as well as a lot more.

I found this out because I recieved a call a few minutes ago about a houseboat named "Eagle One" adrift and headed downstream.

Apparently, this is a boat that has basically been left abandoned in the slip for three years by it's owner.

Bet I can guess what will happen to it.

Folks at Buck Creek / Omega Dock sure have had a tough couple of years. My heart goes out to them...

I say that Marine Assist should have the right to rescue the boat and claim her as salvage. Then, take her home, paint her in a new coat of that wild orange paint, put that pretty logo along the sides and use her as a floating Command Post.

An Update:

The houseboat passed Dixie Bend "twirling in circles" about 2 pm or so according to residents there, along with a section of dock with three fingers attached, a loose pontoon boat and a couple runabouts as well as a section of dock roof.

Captain Dale took a look at the river there and said the debris was so bad from all the rains, you could walk across the lake.

I suspect the boats will probably pass Burnside here pretty shortly.

At this time none of the boats' owners have called me to retrieve any of them and they probably don't even know they are loose. The houseboat was basically abandoned 3 years ago in the slip, so there is no one to speak for it. The rest????

If a person has not paid slip rent in 3 years, why is the boat still in the slip?? I have never figured that out about it here.

Maybe it'll all be washed down below Waitsboro in time for the LC Grand Prix.

I second that motion CB!

Also, I also feel bad for Omega... I saw the news story the other day on it and it was not pretty. :(

Well, we were contracted by a homeowners association to bring their community dock 20 miles back upstream to Buck Creek. Captain Dale is better than halfway back with it as I write this. It is about a 30X50 main dock with 3 fingers and a long ramp to reach the shore. Quite a sight headed up the lake. It will take a total of about 10 hours to get it back where it goes! It was 19 degrees this morning when we started the trek!

I have not heard any more regarding the houseboat, the pontoon or the fishing boats that drifted by from the melee. I figure the houseboat will end up at Conley before it is over.

Paradise Acres communty dock is now back where it is supposed to be. All went well.

Omega Dock is scattered all over both banks of the lake for a few miles. The marina owner was out today with a small skiff trying to round up pieces here and there. What a mess.

Omega?? Are you guys familiar with it? The reason I'm asking is that about 15 years ago we decided to take a drive over that way and we ended up at a ramp/boat dock on Buck Creek. The dock owner or attendant there was talking to us and we asked him about Omega-- a place my dad remembered from back in the 60's and 70's. He told us, and I quote, "I wouldn't take my family around there". He said that Omega had become a hangout place for biker "gangs" and other undesirable sorts. I remember arguing with my dad afterwards because he decided we were'nt going to go check out Omega. I was mad because he fell for the guys story about thugs occupying the area-- I said the guy at Buck Creek was probably spreading that rumour to help keep the visitors and the money coming to his dock instead. My dad said "it's not worth taking any chances"...so I never got to see Omega. Sounds like it must have been cleaned up in the intervening years. Do any of you Omega residents remember a time when there were any bad types hanging around the campground? Did this ever happen, and if so when was it? I guess now I might finally be able to settle the argument with my dad;)

Been there several times and never heard or saw a problem. There are several new homes built around the ramp now. They have a problem with their docks because they are old and are on the main river now. They just moved the old Buck Creek docks to Omega ramp.

As far as drugs are concerned, my experience has been they are all over Lake Cumberland area. They are like bootlegger's all over place and some bootleggers sell booze and drugs.

I grew up in Somerset. In the late 80s and early 90s my boy scout troop had special permission from the Corps to have a summer camp at Omega Park, which was otherwise closed to the public, for one week a summer. There were some problems then with people coming in. Mostly ATVers and such, but there were lots of stories around town at that time about other undesirable things happening out there. I don't think the marina operator was trying to scare you off to help his business, because there was nothing but a launching ramp and a picnic area/campground at Omega.

After the lake was lowered for the dam repairs in 2007, Buck Creek Marina (where you and your dad were) was moved to Omega on the main lake because there's not enough water in Buck Creek now. So, it's totally different than when you were in the area.

Back in 80's and early 90's, we docked at Buck Creek Marina for quite a few years. Still remember Willy and GiGi talking in that German accent. When we heard they were moving the dock to Omega ramp, we knew there would be issues given the condition of the dock. Hopefully no boats were severely damaged.

We used to parasail off Omega ramp. People are correct, there were some issues with activity in the park, even though it was closed to the public.

Anyone know how many boats are still moored at Buck/Omega. I haven't been there since it was moved, last time we visiting Buck Creek was obviously before the lake was lowered. Gigi talked our heads off as she is from Brazil and we were living in Argentina at the time.

Just curious, maybe a trip this summer up the lake.

Its been years since I've been up that way. It is truly a shame that a houseboat gets abandoned and is allowed to wash away. I remember when I would have been tickled to death to have even the smallest houseboat. It is a rather ignominious fate for what was once the apple of the owner's eye. Good luck with the fingers and dock.
