Trouble Catching Lake Bait ?

I just heard from a guide that bait (shad. alewives, etc.) is almost impossible to catch.

Is this true for all over the lake or just the dock where this guide works out of?

I don't want to mention the particular dock so their business isn't threatened.

Its not hard to net shad,,,but the only ones that I've found out on the lake lately are only about 2-3 inches long. I can catch hundreds with one throw. Not sure where all the big ones went???:(

Gizzard shad are in the heads of the creeks in 3-4' of water.
I haven't had any trouble getting all I want

Gene and CampinMan...

Could you give me a "general" area in what part of the lake you catch your bait?
Like near what dock?

also, what time of day do you catch your bait?

I am trying not to ask too specific of questions so you don't think I'll muscle in on your bait!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. What the guide told me was really disheartening, and when I can't catch bait, I usually don't do nearly as well fishing when I use store bought shiners, suckers, etc.

Also, does LC Outdoors on Rt. 90 still have good shiners, etc?

Thanks,
The Fluke

I catch most of mine way back in White Oak Creek or Faubush. But again, it has been very small.
Hope this helps.

I find gizzards in all the major creeks that have flats near the headwaters.
Don't waste your time in clear water, if you can see the bottom in 2' the gizzards aren't there, the more color the better.
With temps dropping afternoon on a clear day is best, the Sun will warm the shallows slightly and encourage algae growth which draws the gizzards.
Stay away from all the little shad, occasionally you'll find larger gizzards with them, but not as a rule.

The biggest mistake I see most is throwing the net too close to the boat, throw as far as you can.
Watch your shadow! That will spook them more than anything.
Keep noise to a minimum, you might think your trolling motor is super quiet, but when your trying to get within a few feet of shad in shallow water it isn't. Let the boat drift some before throwing.
Pay very close attention to the water temp, a change of 1 degree sometimes makes a huge difference.
Throw the biggest net you can, an 8' net covers 49 sq ft, a 10' covers 76 sq ft.

The ideal situation is with the Sun directly overhead or in your face with just enough of a breeze to move the boat in the desired direction and a water temp that is warmer than the surrounding area.

Thanks spoonbill, I should add that the majority of the time the gizzards in shallow water do not "flip"

Hello FlukieLuke,

I went out this weekend with my son and did pretty well catching shad. We, like always, head out early around 4:30AM and toss out a submersible light and it has worked well for us.
This trip we went to Thomas Branch(may be Thompson Branch? my map is in the boat) and caught about 4dozen decent sized shad in the 3-4" range. I use a very nice 30gallon Greyline bait-tank I keep them in... We leave the light in the water for about 20 minutes before I start casting my net, then I have my son disconnect the light from the battery when I make my throw. I'm not exactly sure what that does but it works so I keep doing it?:) Just quessing, but the shad seemed to be in about 12-18 feet of water...
We caught 3 nice stripers, the biggest was 14lbs.
I hope this helps!

Good luck and good fishing!

That's great.
Thank you so much!

I too have a 30 gallon greyline bait tank.
Do you use one of those "green" flourescent type lights?

I might try to go down next week-end so please keep the information flowing.
