Trolling motor batteries

I don't want to start a huge debate on batteries, as there are so many pro's/con's related to each set up. I bought 2 Deka batteries from a dealer, and I believe one was bad. Had them installed on a trolling motor in series, 24 volt. Charger never got them both fully charged, but I thought it was just the charger. Now I have to replace both again. Batteries are 1.3 months old. Deka's prorate is junk. When I realized the charger was not charging all the way, I should have done something immediately, but did not know the boat well, as it was new as well. (used, but new to me) Several have said that Deka is not as good a battery as one would think. For the money, and warrantee, does anyone have a recommendation? Wal-mart? Advanced or the Zone? I know this has been a topic before, probably many many times. I did a search and got a million hits on batteries. Make it a quick topic and we can delete it soon! Thanks and have a great winter.

Check out Superior Battery in Russell Springs if you are in the area, their plant is located at Hwy, 910 and Hwy 76 across from Salem Elementary. I moved her 10 years ago and have used them for all my batterys. Good battery and good warrenty. My Dodge Diesel needs two batterys to operate, both were going bad. Wal-Mart wanted $85 for one battery. Superior installed two brand new batterys the next size up for $135. That was 6 yrs ago. Onr battery went bad because of a problem with my truck, they replaced at no cost to me after about a year. I have purchased my batterys for other cars, tractor, wood chipper, deep cycle. Very happy with them. They manufactor batteries for many different retailers, they just affix the right sticker.

Agree with POPS recommendation. Recently purchased new trolling motor deep cycle battery there. Certainly happy with $ and performance thus far.

Thanks for the reports and great post Pops and PaPa.
Don't mean to put you on the spot but can you name a few of the retailers they re-brand their batteries for, if you know? Its kind of hard for me to get to Russell Springs and I would like to try something different.

Just bought 2 D-8s Champion brand from Sam's Club...159.95 each. I have had them before with no serious problems... but they just don't seem to last as long as I expect them to.

My last few purchases have been through Walmart, They have a great 2 year full exchange warrantee. Had a battery take a nose dive, Frozen over the winter when the float charger went south. No questions asked (18 months into the warrantee) Full replacement and out the door with a fresh new starter battery.

I know I will make my nex batteries Walmart as well. I used to rely on Duralast from Autozone because they seemed to hold up longer and had a great replacement policy but the Full two year policy of Walmart works for me.

PS~ Deka is on the bottom of list in my book.

I agree that Wall-Mart is the way to go. Dekas are junk and i've got the receipts to prove it. Wal-Marts are in every town and they have a no-hassle return policy. Just keep your receipts with the batteries in a baggie. I have never been refused a return or exchange at a Wal-Mart. I believe in this philosophy to the point that I use them for my boats, the house batteries on my houseboat as well as for the inverter system

You all have been the best. Thank you very much! Local dealers are pushing the Deka. They don't sell them as much, therefore mixed a bad in with one good when they sold it to me. I was too stupid to realize it. They say Deka is by far the best. Yeah RIGHT! Hope they read these posts, and I'm sure they will! I even remember the batteries being very dirty, dusty when they installed them.

Thank you ALL for the support and replies. I'll try to go with Pops and PaPa's advice if I can get there in time Friday. I must have 2 deep cells by Friday evening. If not, my butt will be in WallyWorld.
Again THANK You ALL!

I use Interstate batteries and have had them since 2006 and must say I have run them hard with the trolling motor, never a problem and still take a full charge and hold it.

This is my exp. I have used Delco Voyager's for years I this year replaced the batterys just for the fact that they were over 8 years old and I thought it was just time to replace. They are sealed true maintence free and never put acid in you're boat. They are still going strong here at the trailer and runnig pumps for the bait tank's.
I did "upgrade" to the OPTIMAS for the trolling motor this year, we shall see if it was worth it in the future.

Series or Parallel?

I noticed that you posted that you have two (2) batteries wired in Series for a total of 24 VDC. If you are trying to charge them with a 12 VDC charger, it won't work - and may damage either the batteries or the charger.

There are a number of earlier threads regarding batteries but here are some links that you will find helpful:

To begin with, CLICK HERE.

This one is kinda old but might be just what you need: CLICK HERE

And, for all you iPod users out there, here is some info that you might not have known about batteries: CLICK HERE

WaterWings, you might try a call to them at 270-866-4081, and explain that you live out of the area but would like to purchase a battery they manufactor, that you understand theirs is sold under different names, they should let you know. One guy showed a board they had when I first went there and it had at least 30-40 stickers of differents names their battery is sold. If you stike out send me a u2u and I will stop by their and get some brand names for your area if possible.

Buy the very biggest WalMart deep cycle batteries they make.
That's what I use, also in series/24volt.

I know a well known phishing guide on LC that does the same thing.

My 24 volt set up is charged by a dual-Co charger. 1 unit, 2 charging leads. Looks like I'll be stopping off at Wal-mart.
