Close to another Great Season.

Last weekend old Nearly was put to rest for her long winter's nap. I wish I could go to sleep and wake up to spring...

That ride out through the Park seemed extra long last night but it did give me a period to reflect over the past summer.

Here's wishing everyone a safe and healthy winter season.

Ah! To be 'baptized' in the cool waters of Lake Cumberland again while the warm sun beats down on me. To hear my children laughing, splashing and playing among the waters, the rocks, the mud, and the water falls; To feel that ping of joy as the engine starts on the first crank at the dock; to know that unbridled joy that you timed it just right when you left the cove you had explored all afternoon, high-tailed it toward your home dock, having waited to the last possible minute before dark, but late enough that the waters had stilled and you glided across a smooth lake; to feel the warmth that only a parent knows as your child tubes for the first time or skis and says "thank Dad, I had a GREAT day" upon your arrival at the dock; to have luckily caught an eagle flying, a "big" fish jumping, a turtle floating; to have the weakest bait, the most embarassing pole and still pull in a fish that any TV fisherman would be proud of; to laugh with friends, cook dinner with them, share stories of their day on Lake Cumberland.....these, ...these and much more are what I now begin to look forward to....the proverbial "next summer".

Wow! JB, if that doesn't make you want to wish your winter away and be able to wake up tomorrow and have it be spring, there's something wrong with you. :)

Summertime is great, but the season ain't over yet.

Watching the leaves turn, the smell of bacon cooking and cherry wood burning in the wood
stove on a cool Autumn morning, watching the migrating flocks of birds before sunset, listening
to the sound of the woodpeckers, squirrels, and chickadees in the trees, catching crappie in
the morning and then having Thanksgiving turkey that evening, listening to the snow fall on
the fallen leaves, yelling a friendly "Howdy" across the holler when you see your neighbors
through the trees, and last but not least, hearing nothing on a cold winter night. For me, this is
my continuation of serenity.

She's almost as pretty in the winter, but just a little to cold for a dip. We will be down again this weekend.

Winter At Lake Cumberland Is Special For The Bluebird Family

Almost every New Year's day since 1978 I have been blessed to be at the lake.
A roaring fire in the Franklin stove, good food, family, friends and on most years a little fishing near the State Dock.

Sometimes I catch a fish & sometimes I don't......
There is no better winter place to be unless you want to snow ski.

In January the long M. L. King weekend always kicked off another river fishing season.....
And on most years, we caught fish.

In late February, I always look forward to seeing dozens of daffodils sprouting out of the snow near our lake home.
(These daffodils were transplanted by my kids in the 80s from a nearby woods)
My grandkids now see the magic of the winter daffodils just as my 5 kids did.....;)

Some of the best lake winter memories we have include
- a blizzard on SuperBowl weekend in the 80s.....
- an ice storm that shut down the county in the 90s.
- We had no electricity, kept the woodburning stove going & played old-time games.

The smell of cedar smoke is an automatic response for me any time I start thinking of winter at Lake Cumberland!!!!

And Elvis did howl in the moonlight a couple of times when he saw deer in the distance.:D

Nearly, you should trade that cruiser in on a houseboat. Then you could come down and enjoy the lake during the winter. I winterize the engines and fill up the water tanks then enjoy the lake during the winter whenever I can. Keep a pontoon with outboard tied on the side until about January so I can go out and enjoy the lake and water if I want. I even go down in Jan, Feb or March if its going to be a nice weekend.
Believe it or not, its probably cheaper for me to go to the lake since if I stay home I am duty bound to go "SHOPPING". Trust me, that can be some big bucks. :o

The lake is definitely different and gets real quiet in the winter time... but interesting and beautiful none the less.

House boat is most likely the next step. Just waiting for this economy to turn around.
