The Lake Cumberland Striper Fishing Report

By Captain Jim Durham – StriperFun Guide Service
Staff Writer for fishin.com

Greetings to my readers! Life is good! I hope the world finds you and your family doing well!

ACTIVITY / CURRENT REPORT

Summer has ended and “fall” is definitely here! You can feel it in the air!

Since my last report, fishing has been steady (and on some days “spectacular”!). See the website to see photos of some nice recent catches!

I reported a few weeks ago, I was seeing a lot more bait up on top and Stripers lurking near the surface (as well as staging below in 15 to 20 feet of water). Well, the surface water has finally cooled to that “perfect” temperature and “whammo”, the Stripers are busting the surface chasing bait everywhere!!!

We are catching them big time casting lures and trolling live bait shallow! Yee Hi!!! It just doesn’t get any better than this! One of the most positive things is that we can now catch alewives shad under the lights again!

Regarding catching bait, one of the new “secret weapons” I have been using to catch bait is the “Hydro Glow Bait Light”! Captain Jim Durham uses “Hydro Glow Bait Lights” and so should you! It allows me to be “mobile” and catch bait on the main lake as well as at the dock!

The Hydro Glow Fish Light uses a 12 vdc low amperage florescent to produce a green glow similar to that emitted by chemical light sticks in widespread use by divers to lure fish.

It will work all night on one battery!

The patented design utilizes the green light technology for improving your fishing (and most importantly – your bait catching) activities during the night time hours. The light is designed to vertically submerge with only the top 3 to 5 inches of the light above the water level. This insures the entire illumination of the light is in the water where to fish are, not the bugs! Boy, does it ever draw in the bait fish!

As the exclusive area "on line" dealer of Hydro Glow Bait Lights, StriperFun has just received word from the manufacturer that the top selling 2 foot bait light can be sold from now until Christmas for $129.95!! This is a huge 30% savings off the regular $185.00 price!

TO ORDER, GO TO THE STRIPERFUN WEBSITE!

Regarding the water related temperature issues I talked about in my last report, to recap, in May of this year Kentucky had the most rain every recorded. As such, the Corp of Engineers had to release a record amount of water out of the lake to make room for this massive influx of rainwater………………………..

My farther and I went striper fishing Monday night 10/26 in Fishing Creek casting the banks with Little Macs. Not must luck though, a few were jumping about 40 foot from the bank. Dad did catch one dandy smallmouth -21 inches long :)

I was at the Pleasant Hill Boat Ramp, Thursday Oct. 29th about 30 minutes before dusk.
There were shad at the surface, big time. I saw a fisherman put his boat in the water who
immediately started trolling the bay around the marina with lures. He said later, he
didn't have any live bait.

Right at dusk, he was back at the ramp with (2) nice strippers around 35 inches in length.
He couldn't have been fishing more than 30 minutes.

striper bite

Was down Friday Saturday and Sunday. Friday caught 3 keepers in the head of Lilly Creek all about 20 feet deep. We started pulling planers and ended up just down rodding and drifting in the creek.

Saturday started off ok, put 3 in the boat while it was raining. After the rain we only caught 2 small ones and a catfish. We made a move to up past aligator and found a LOTS of baitfish and put one more keeper in the boat.

Sunday was incredible!!! We fished the bay WAY up the creek past alligator. The fish were in 4 -5 ft of water and just busting the baitfish. We caught 7 keepers in 2 hours and 4 small ones. All on planers 4 over 36". We lost 5 fish with the planers (gonna have to look into that). Had 3 on at one time. The sun came up and burned off the fog and the fishing went south.

Made a move back to the head of Lilly creek and caught 2 more fish 1 keeper so we were done. Lost 2 more on planers (noticing a pattern?)

The bay past alligator was the best fising by far, was us and only one other boat. Live bait was the ticket. The other boat was using lures and only boated 1 fish. We gave them some live bait and they had a ball. The fish would "hit" evenly on shad and shiners, we really didnt notice a difference in the bite other than the large fish all came on shad. we noticed a majority of the bites came on the boards the furthest from the boat so we started pulling the outer board 100' from the boat and the second board 70' from the boat and dragging balloons 125' and 75' from the boat. All but 2 fish came from the outer baits (hint hint). Just basic rigging planer with bait about 7-10 ft back.

I just started coming to Cumberland in July. Ive always been a bass fisherman and went with the "guys". In August I took my girlfriend striper fishing down there and she LOVES it. She always said I'm ate up with it and I'm worse than a "woman" shopping when it comes to fishing. She looked me like I was crazy when we bought the Ranger. She looked at me like I was crazy buying GPS, trolling motors, baits, etc. So now she likes this striper fishing we've added a center console boat with new GPS, trolling motor, baits, etc. :P

We really enjoy the lake and have met some GREAT people there. I have noticed that very few will give you productive fishing patterns though.;) NOT ME. I get just as much satisfaction helping other catch fish (if I can) as when I catch them. Good Luck.

I'll be back in 2 weeks.

PS if anybody has any bait catching tips let me know;) Ive dropped lights 4 time and caught a grand total of 2 shad. (noticing another patter?)

Hi CPT. Jim,
This is my first post on here but I have been enjoying reading your reports for over a year now. I cannot thank you enough for the informative video series and your bi-weekly posts on here...they have both helped me catch some very nice stripers and helped figure out catching those elusive SHAD!!
I bought a new Calusa cast-net I can't wait to try out with my 7year old son this weekend...I'll keep you all posted on our success!
Thanks again and Good Fishing...!

Thanks for the report Bill28. I appreciate the where more than the how. Not many will tell you where!!
If you get a cast net, you can net your own bait, but just like the stripers, you must find them first. Lately most of the surface bait is only about 2-3 inches long.
