Lil History

This is why I love the lake, love the area, and especially love people like this guy.
Love these old stories, and love people who grew up here and returned.

I believe if Cumberline had lived longer, his "book(s)" would have been filled with pictures and the oral histories of folks like Mr. Sterns.

These need to be preserved so future generations can appreciate and enjoy them as much as most of us do today.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Jabez Boy, check of the book,"The Final Tide" by Norma Cole. Its about one familys way of life that had been pretty much unchanged for 100++ years till the creation of Lake Cumberland forced them to give up their homeland and move. Vivid description of the clearing of vast amounts ancient woodlands and the demolition of homes and buildings.

BTW did you know the name "Jabez" appears three times in the Bible, all in First Chronicals. It means "a place of hiding".

A lot of old timers around can tell good stories of the area pre Wolf Creek Dam. I always enjoyed listening to Thruston Antle talk about growing up here.

I had a cousin who died a couple years ago. He grew up in the Pumpkin Creek bottoms before the lake was flooded and walked to school at Jamestown. He joined the Navy after school and retired after 30 years to the San Fransisco area. He used to come back to visit every couple years and I took him back to Pumpkin Creek by boat 6 or 8 years ago to look around. It was the first time he had seen it since it was flooded, so he was showing me where they used to walk up the hills going to visit other people in the area. He had very vivid memories of the place and surprisingly enough, every place he would tell me they used to walk up the hills as a short cut to go some place, there was still an old path visible. I guess the deer and other animals kept using their old foot paths long after the lake was flooded. I thought it was pretty amazing that he would point out a place and tell me they used to climb up the hill over there going to such and such place and when I took him over there to get closer you could still see their old foot paths.

A real good friend of mine's parents owned a farm at the entrance to Beaver Creek. They called it Smith's Bottom, he has went on to do fairly well for himself and he has a houseboat at State Dock with "Smith's Bottom" on it. He owns a large construction company and has also has installed most of the new water intakes in the lake.

Ok. I will definitely look up the book. HOWEVER, I am neither an engineer, NOR a minister, but .... I THINK Jabez is the name of a judge in Chronicles. Hence, the Prayer of Jabez phenom a few years back.

Of course, growing up, I assumed it was named after some French trapper and pronounced Je-bay and just butchered through the ages, much like Versailles, Dubois, etc. However, after the Prayer of Jabez popularity, I learned that he was a judge in Chronicles.

And now, ...the more I think of it....how ironic is that I now use Jabezboy as my post name (?) [Captain Bob and Squakmeister: ssshhhhh]
