DAM TO BE WATERTIGHT

By BILL MARDIS, CJ Editor Emeritus
Commonwealth Journal
Somerset — All dams have some seepage, engineers say, but indications are the earthen section of Wolf Creek Dam will be as watertight as can be when a new concrete barrier wall is in place by late 2012.

“Everything that goes in there stays in there,” commented Fred Tucker, public affairs specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This includes the new concrete barrier wall to be installed during the next three years; a preliminary wall currently being inserted to stabilize the earthen embankment while the permanent barrier wall is formed; and the original barrier wall put in place during the 1970s. All will remain in the dam.

In other words, the rehabilitated dam will have three concrete walls inside its earthen structure that makes up about three quarters of the dam’s slightly more than a mile length. There apparently are no seepage problems in the concrete section of the dam.

Corps engineers say the $584 rehabilitation now under way should be a permanent fix. They say it will assure the safety of the dam at least through the remainder of this century...

And they're doing it all for $584 that's impressive.

My understanding is that the area you are speaking of - "Critical Area No. 1" - is still leaking, perhaps as much as it ever did.

The location is where the concrete portion of Wolf Creek Dam and the earthen section join.

The grout simply never filled the voids. Of course the grout work was intended all along to be a temporary fix, or at least a slowdown fix, until the wall was finished.

At the last meeting I attended, (last summer) the plan was to shift into the next phase - the actual cutoff wall, and to complete a couple of test areas away from "Critical Area No. 1" to make sure the method that will be used is going to work, then the work will shift to "Critical Area No.1" where the cutoff wall will be installed. In the meantime, the contractor on board for the installation of the actual cutoff wall would also continue to look at other ways to fill the area with grout.

Again, that was my last information, and it could have changed since that particular meeting. If anyone has any new updates, go ahead and chime in (KDFWR911-?)

$584. WOW.

That should make my new 24 x 36 garage project less than $10.
