Resizing and attaching photos to your post made simple
For viewing speed and visual sense, the following rules apply putting images on this forum--
1/ The file size must be no larger than 50K bytes (50,000). The forum software will ignore files larger than this.
2/ The visual size of the image no longer than 640 pixels (increased from 400 on 3/14/11) on the longest edge. This means resizing your
photos before “attaching” or linking them to a post.
You can use your own photo manipulating programs. If you don’t have any or are not comfortable with using them, there is another very simple way to do
this, as described below. Assuming the photo(s) are available to your computer, first go to the following web site...
http://shrinkpictures.com – You can follow the instructions your find there, but basically once you are at the site, browse for your photograph on
your computer, select a size (350) or choose Custom and type in 640, don’t bother with checking the effects unless you want color to go away,
select output quality (this affects the file size: “better” may work, “good” definitely will), then click “Resize.” You’ll get a smaller image that is
a smaller file. Just right-click on the smaller image and save it to somewhere on your computer where you can find it.
To attach an image to your post here, first note that you must be in the full New Topic or Edit window, *not* using the Quick Reply feature at the
bottom of the thread. Notice that when you are typing, at the very bottom where you click to Post (or Edit etc) to appear, there is a place for an
Attachment.

To attach your photo, click the CHOOSE button there, maneuver your way around your computer to where you just saved the reduced image and select it.
Then, when you click the Post/Edit button your picture will upload to the forum at the same time and will appear with your comments.
Note: If it doesn’t, the problem is likely the file size is greater than 50K. Just revisit shrinkpictures.com and choose “good” for output quality if
you had chosen “better” the first time.
There is a shortcut button to shrinkpictures.com in the top right corner of each forum page. Just click it to go there quickly. It will open a new
browser window.

Or put them on a hosting service
Another option that many folks use is to post your photos into an online photo hosting service, then simply put the link they supply into your post
here.

How about posting Youtube video attachments without the link? Seems like I did this once or twice and now either I forgot or I can't do it on here.

Thanks, Boss for posting this and for including that link to http://shrinkpictures.com
However, some of the Mods were thinking about charging for all the photos that we "re-size" for our members. I believe that Mamakin was thinking of
buying something nice for Christmas this year. (She re-sizes more photos than the rest of us put together)

Oh well, I got to the point where I clicked on the 'resized' photo in my pictures. When I tried to post, the window flickered and got a 'bong' sound.
It wouldn't upload.
Maybe one of these days I'll get it.

Where did you get the bong? Had you already completed the resizing at shrinkpictures.com?

Yes, I went to the website and resized the pic and saved it in 'My Pics" on the computer. I had both windows open (minimzed) and had the photo
selected. When I clicked the post reply button, the 'My Pic' window flickered and I got the 'bong' sound.

Well, that's one on me. Offhand I don't see why the My Pic window would do that. It doesn't have any connection with the process and doesn't need to
be open. Once you have the image saved in that directory on your computer, you go to the Attachment CHOOSE button as described above and select the
image located in that directory. When you post your message with the attached photo, it just grabs the file from where you told it to.

Okay, I tried one more time. Here are my steps...
(already have resized photo in 'My Pics')
1) click on New Topic
2) type in 'test photo'
3) click on Browse (by attachments) 'My Pics' window now opens. (minimized)
4) click on resized photo and click on Post New Topic.
5) My Pics window flickers and I get the bong sound. (Like telling me I can't do that)
6) I give up! ???
BTW, thanks for your patience!

Oh...
Need to finish one step. When the My Pics window comes up and you click on the file name of the one you want, then click the "Open" button. This will
close the My Pics dialogue and you'll see the path to the pic be inserted in the Attachment field. Then it will be able to post. The bong is coming
because you haven't finished with the selection process and the dialogue hasn't closed.
Now you'll get it.

Try saving the picture at the next lower quality setting and then try uploading.

There are two (2) criteria that must be met. 350 max on a side AND no more than 50K bytes.
The newer cameras shoot at such high "megapixel" settings that, even at 350 on a side, the image file exceeds 50K.
Many folks are not aware that their cameras default to the highest resolution setting. Setting your camera to a lower resolution setting (refer to
your User Manual) will generally not affect the quality of your images (unless you need to blow them up to poster size) but it will allow your camera
"save" the images faster to the memory card and it will allow you to store many more of them on that card.
Try setting your camera to a lower or medium resolution setting --and see if you can tell the difference in the image.
Note: that last comment does not apply to characters like Cumberline or Cranky or others who suffer from hyper-pixelation syndrome

that must be the problem, is there a way to take a pic that has already been taken and save it at a lower resolution

I am not the photo expert on this Forum so I hope that some of the "experts" will give you better advice...
However, as a starter, if you use the free photo reducer that Cumberline mentioned in the first post on this thread, try using "Good" on option #4 on
that page. That will lower the resolution on your image.

Maybe we could take a donation to get bigger hard drives. Its a pain in the but to resize. Its not my fault my camera is dang good. I have to
shrink below 350 to make 50K. Its just frustrating, and Hard Drive space is nothing these days.

It's not hard drive space, but the file size in transmitting that is the issue. A number of folks still use dialup or relatively slow connections.
Sometimes a thread may have a couple dozen pix in it, and if they were all 500K bytes would take forever for it to open for them.
Using shrinkpicture.com and the "good" setting, it will likely make any photo file size small enough to fit the forum criteria.
