Excellent reading...
Have fished the river a thousand times over 40 years.
God willing I am looking forward to a long float trip in 2009.
(Dam to Tennessee line, several friends, several boats)

Has anyone floated from dam to Burksville this summer. ????
I would be interested in your low water experiences.

I fished below Winfrey ferry last week had a great time in very low water. (Fished about a 2 mile area with good results in my old 14 ft Starcraft.....)

With rain, leaves will mess up low water fishing for a while.

This is a great read. I thought I will just look at the photos now I just can't stop. Here is one part that just made me laugh out loud.

The huge lock gates began to open, so I motored us inside and tied the boat to the floating lock buoy. The "Lock Master" came out of his office and in a nice friendly way, fussed at me for entering the lock before he had sounded the "come into the lock horn". I apologized and told him I was new to using the locks. Secretly, I was thinking that this dude had an "I'm the boss" complex. I think he was letting the title "Lock Master" go to his head. After all no one calls Neal "WasteWater Treatment Master" because he is the boss over wastewater treatment in Russell County. No one calls me "Light Bulb Changing Master" just because I am an Electrician, although I am a master at changing light bulbs.

The "Lock Master" asked where we were going, I told him "The Mississippi River." He looked at us like we were crazy! Then he said,"no really where are you guys going?" I told him the Mississippi River, again. He said "in that boat!" I guess he thought we were crazy, but I was thinking that he wasn't the sharpest tack in the box,so I guess it evened its self out. Finally, he started doing his job, he shut the lock gates and the water level started to drop. Old Hickory lock is the same size as the one at Cordell Hull. The process was pretty much the same except this time the "Lock Master" had a golf cart that he used to ride around the lock to work the controls.

Rivermen Book Signing at Library July 18

Columbia's resident adventurer, electrician, and author Chris Bennett will be at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 10:00amCT. to sign copies of his book, "Rivermen of the Cumberland."

Many of you followed Chris on columbiamagazine.com as he told of his grand adventure on the Cumberland River. This is a great opportunity to meet the man who has seen the river up close and personal, and get a signed copy of his resulting book.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the library on the 18th, and they can also be purchased now from Amazon.com or ordered through your local bookseller with ISBN 978-0-557-05263-9.

For fastest home delivery, order online today at columbiamagazine.com/books, where it is available both in softcover book form or formatted for instant downloading to your computer or portable book reader.

About the book, Rivermen of the Cumberland:
In need of adventure, and inspired by the explorations of Lewis and Clark, Chris Bennett made a plan to take his small fishing boat on an historic 460-mile journey down the Cumberland River. The trip would begin in Creelsboro, Kentucky, just a few miles below Wolf Creek Dam, and take him through Nashville, Tennessee, and on past the Land Between the Lakes to the Ohio River.

Says Chris,
"I wanted to seek out new life, and new civilizations; I wanted to boldly go where no electrician, or used guitar salesman, had gone before…"
In June of 2007, he recruited Neal "Action" Jackson, of Jamestown, Kentucky, and loaded up his trusty Bass Tracker to set out on the adventure of a lifetime.

Part travelogue, part rural history, part high-seas adventure, Rivermen of the Cumberland is funny, inspiring, and insightful.

For more information about the book signing, please call the library at 270-384-2472. The library is located at 307 Greensburg Street just above the old Harvey-Ellis building and across the street from Quality Personnel. The Adair County Public Library is open Monday 8:00-6:00, Tuesday through Friday 8:00-4:30 and Saturday 8:00 until noon.
