Need pics of Cave Springs School and Church, Gadberry School, Wolf Creek School, Turpin School, and I was told there was a Chumbley School on the creek below Ben Roy Rd. at the forks of Wolf Creek and House Fork Creek.

Also, Im looking for any pictures of old stores, churches, post offices, old houses, and their where-abouts.

My recent findings show that Cumberland Ridge Church, or "Military Springs Church" as all the old folks in Jabez called it was indeed located inside the present day Military Springs Cemetery in Jabez. The graveyard itself grew around the church as time went by. The earliest record I could find of the church was is 1874 and the last being 1931. When it was tore down I dont know. I would like to find pictures of this church if anyone has any.

The Union Ridge School started around 1915 I think and it was originally a wooden school until a bad storm blew it apart and itwas rebuilt as a stone building. I have 1 picture of the stone building there. I think the building may have been used as a church at one time too, not sure. Maybe Morrow's Chapel was the only church down there.

As far as Coles School and Church, I dont think the name is correct. It is printed Cole School andChurch on the 1943 USACE Map, but all the old people of Jabez say there was no Cole School or Church, It was Cave Springs School and Church which was located in the same area as shown on the map. I dont have any years on either of these, or people who went here, or pictures. If anyone can chime in here, please do so.

Polston School was located across from the entrance to Dudley Hill in Jabez where there is now about 3 boat storages on the left. In my findings, Polston School was there as far back as 1878 or possibly before that, not sure. I do have 1 picture of this school but would like to have a better one if anyone has one.

Stevens School was apparently located somewhere on the lower end of Jabez fairly close to Cave Springs from what I can gather. I think it lasted up till 1922 or 23 I think and then the Jabez School started on the same property the old building is on today below Galand Jasper. Although, apparently there was an old Jabez School located down Union Ridge Rd out the Robert Johnson Rd before moving. I need more info on this school if anyone can contribute.

Wolf Creek School was located on the bottom below Harris' Grocery and across the bottom from the old All. 1 dock site. I have a picture of Wolf Creek School in 1914 with students standing in front of it, but you cant really see the school that good. I would like to have a good picture of this school and some more info on it.

As for Sandy Hollow School, I have a good picture of the last building located across from Twin Oaks Rd down over the hill kinda. Apparently, Sandy Hollow School is one of the oldest, if not THE oldest school in Jabez starting around 1838 I think. There were about 3-4 different Sandy Hollow schools. I dont know much about the first 3 schools - where they were located, years, students, etc..

I will post pics I have of these schools as soon as I get them scanned to my computer.

There were a few more schools in Jabez that Im not familiar with at all. Turpin School, Gadberry School, and Chumbley School. If anyone can contribute to any of these, I would appreciate it!

From 1909-1932, there were 61 schools operating in Russell Co. The Jabez School. Due to its location, Jabez was one of the last schools in Ky to consolidate. It was the last one in Russell Co. to close. Bussing was cited as the main reason for continuing the school long after consolidation had taken place.

In 1932 a resolution was passed by the Board of Ed. to not hire any women teachers. This was during the depression when heads of families were desparate for work. The idea didnt last long. In a teachers manual from the board in the late 40's, every reference to a teacher is "her" or "she". In 1887 R.G. wolford was paid $73.52 for one year as a teacher. Salaries ranged from $40.00 per year to $162.32. ( from record book ending June.1888)

The name "Jabez appears three times in the Bible, all in First Chronicals. Jabez means," A place of hiding". Russell, Wayne, and Pulaski counties all come together here. There was no way of separating Jabez and Panhandle, afour mile square of no mans land. This area was ideal for place for people wanting to escape the law, as a sheriff could not cross a county line. For a fugitive who knew where the county lines laid, he could look face to face with a sheriff without being arrested. In order to apprehend such a fugitive it would require officers for all three counties to be there at the same place at the same time. Jabez had its own doctor, J.B. Sholl, who served the area till his death in 1937, and buried in Military Springs Cemetery.

I am awed!!! That is such neat information.
I don't know that much about the schools and their history where I've lived all of my life, but I'm loving learning about the schools and the situations there!!
That's fascinating about the "Jabez Triangle"!!! Wow! Wouldn't have thought about it being a hiding place for an outlaw! Cool!
I am familiar with the present day "Prayer of Jabez" books, but wasn't aware of the meaning of the name either.
Boy, I'm just gaining knowledge by leaps and bounds!!
Thank you so much for sharing this all!

Is this a hobby or part of your line of work?
Thanks again for sharing such interesting knowledge. That's the kind of information that is difficult to find much of without really delving into it.
Thank you again!!

Thank you everyone for all the input on Jabez. Very interesting and love the pictures. My grandparents are the Campbell's and I do have some maps, pictures, etc. I'll try to get them loaded.

Stephens School

Kyle,
The Stephens School was on the John Oakes Farm, across the road from what is now called Buck Lane. I remember when the well was still there but the building was gone.
Also, I see you found the information on Cumberland Ridge Church. In fact, the cemetery was originally called Cumberland Ridge Cemetery. I remember when the building was still standing, but barely. I believe it was not torn down until after Georgia Wilson died in 1957. I remember being there when the community was cleaning up the cemetery, removing fences that were falling down, etc., but don't know for sure if that is when the building was removed. The building stood close to where the Military Spring sign is located.
