Kycaver,

I used to ride my bicycle to that cave as well as the one at PineHill. We would tape flashlights together and explore(not safe).

its about 15 min from Mt Vernon ,,take your time ,its a curvy road,

To get to the Great Saltpetre Preserve, please follow the directions below.

Take I-75 to Exit 59 (Mount Vernon, Ky). Travel EAST on Route 25 and turn LEFT immediately onto Route 1004. Continue until Route 1004 comes to a "T" (just over the Railroad tracks and concrete bridge) and turn RIGHT. Look for the second Concrete bridge and you are almost there. Continue for 1 mile up a hill and look for the Great Saltpetre Preserve sign on the right. It is a total of 9 miles on Route 1004.

You wont be able to miss it.

Is there anything in particular I should bring, I know the temp will be around 50 so I will dress warm. You mentioned a picnic area, are there tables, grills?

The temp in the cave will be 56 f. A jacket or sweater is recomended. There is allso a picnic shelter(with tables) for all.If you need a grill we will find you one to use.Livingston FD cooks burgers n such (its a fund raiser for them) and there is plenty of home made bean soup n corn bread (free at shelter),,,,Bring a flashlight or 3 if you are bringing lil ones, the cave is fully lighted but a flashlight will enable them to see into the nooks n crannys.,,,,,,,,Saturday afternoon there will be (what i consider) the best bluegrass band in Ky playing under the shelter.....

Bluegrass? Hey I'm a member of OKI. Now I know I gotta come! I looked in my newsletter from OKI but didn't see who was playing. What time Sat. afternoon does the band play?
Sounds like I just need to bring money instead of a cooler with food!

Thanks for the info! I'll see you there.
